(Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States) – Giannis Antetokounmpo, also known as the “Greek Freak”, has committed to a long term contract with his team, the Milwaukee Bucks. After spending the break between the seasons in Greece serving part of his military conscription service, Antetokounmpo will start the NBA season with the rest of his fellow teammates, especially now that he and the Bucks have agreed to the terms of his contract. Giannis also returned to Greece over the summer to play for the Greek national basketball team, who ultimately failed to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Bucks confirmed that they reached an agreement in a press release and then later gave more details in a press conference. The deal is reportedly worth over 100 million USD. This locks the talented star into playing for the Bucks for an extended period of time. In signing the deal, he also became the highest paid Greek athlete in history.
Antetokounmpo showed in the 2015 team that his skills and talent are invaluable. He Averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game during the season and the hope is that he will repeat this performance, if not improve it, over the course of his career. Not only is his performance high, but he isn’t prone to injury. For all of his three seasons, he only missed a total of six games.
For the longest time, Amtetokkounmpo was considered to be, “without a country.” As the son of Nigerian immigrants, he was prohibited from becoming a Greek citizen even though he was born in Greece. He speaks Greek and spent his childhood working his way through the Greek school system. He is now officially a citizen of Greece. Because of the involvement of the Greek Basketball Association, he was able to attain citizenship status.
