(Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States) – The Greek Festival in Fort Wayne, IN is taking place this weekend at Headwaters Park. The festival, which is celebrating its 36th year, started on June 23 and will end on June 26. This festival gives people in the Fort Wayne area a chance to celebrate the Greek culture by doing this like listening to Greek music, dancing, and eating the Greek food. This year, there are also other activities people can enjoy such as a 5 K run and there are also activities for the kids at the Kids Corner. The Olympic 5k Walk/Run is taking place on Saturday June 25th in the morning at 10 AM. Registration for those who do so on the day of the race is $25.
For most people who attend the festival, however, the real highlight is the food. Festival volunteers have been preparing for the event for the past few months, which means that there will be plenty of food for people to enjoy. Foods such as souvlaki, gyro sandwiches, pastitsio, spanakopita, and Greek pizza are amongst festival favorites. There will also be Greek sweets and desserts such as baklava and sweet bread. Those who are adventurous may even want to try the octopus dinner, which is one of the highlights of the menu.
There is also an option for kids under 12 years of age who are accompanied by an adult. They will get a free hot dog! You can also drink Greek beverages, such as the Greek beer, Keo. Visit the taverna for even more choices. You can either get the meal to take home or enjoy it at the festival. If you eat it at the festival, consider staying for the entertainment, which is provided by the band, LAZAROS. You can also watch an area dance troupe perform on all days of the festival.
