(Oakmont, Pennsylvania, United States) – The Greek Festival will take place this weekend at the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church will take place this weekend from June 24, 2016 to June 26, 2016 at the grounds of the church. This is the annual festival’s 41st year, which means that they have had plenty of experience creating a great festival that members of the local community look forward to year after year.
While at the festival, people have the chance to experience the Greek culture by listening to Greek music, eating the delicious food, and learning all about traditional Greek dance. For members of the Greek community, it is a chance to not only celebrate their own culture, but to share their culture with the rest of the community. The festival event page on the church’s website states that, “In Greece, a panayita (festival) consists of good food, drink, music and dancing.” Their own festival keeps with that tradition.
For festival goers, however, the real highlight is the food. Festival volunteers have been busy making their preparations for the past several months, and the reward is that guests have the chance to eat the delicious, handmade specialties. Menu items include gyro sandwiches made with warm pita bread, meat, tzatziki, tomatoes, and onions, souvlaki, dolmadas, and more. There will also be Greek desserts on the menu to enjoy, such as baklava and koulourakia. Guests can eat their food while also enjoying the Greek culture at the festival, or they can get takeout to take home and enjoy. Those who stay can eat their food while listening to the live music and they can even participate in the Greek dancing. Other activities to do include shopping from some of the vendors, watching dancing demonstrations, and there are even activities for the kids. Those who are interested in learning about the church itself and the Orthodox faith can also take a church tour. The church is located at 12 Washington Avenue in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
