Greek Nonprofit ‘The Smile of the Child to Visit’ Canadian Cities

(Canada) – The Smile of the Child, a nonprofit organization from Greece whose mission it is to advocate for children’s rights and child protection, is scheduled to visit two Canadian cities, Montreal and Toronto, this coming week. The tour into Canada is a continuation of a tour that also had the organization stopping in New York City. The Smile of the Child will visit Montreal from May 5, 2017 to May 7, 2017 and then will be in Toronto from May 8, 2017 to May 9, 2017. Both cities have a thriving Greek diaspora.

The organization is looking at these visits as a chance to drum up support for their cause. The goal is for to connect the organization with actors and other supporters from outside Greece in order to promote the overall cause. According to a press release explaining the visit, “The Smile of the Child” will discuss with international stakeholders and child protection organizations the challenges and the crucial situation for children and families in crisis-hit Greece, while emphasis will be put on the unprecedented refugee crisis that is still ongoing in the country and taking a heavy toll on children in urgent need of international protection and care.”

“The Smile of the Child” has been an NGO (nonprofit) since 1996 and they’re devoted to helping children worldwide, but especially in Greece. In 2016,t he organization has helped around 100,000 children. The organization offers a variety of services to assist and support children, particularly those who have been victims of violence, those who have gone missing, children living in poverty, and those who are experiencing serious health problems.

According to the Children’s Rights Organization Network, “The Smile of the Child” was the dream of Andreas Yannopoulos, who later lost his life. The website says, “It began as the dream of 10-year old Andreas Yannopoulos, who, shortly before losing his own battle for life, documented his vision in his journal.” The organization has adhered to his mission ever since the NGO was started in 1996.
