Eligible Greek Singles

So recently I have been trying to trace down my Greek ancestors and have come to a difficulty with name translation. My last name in common western letters is Gikas, but I know that because Greek characters are different it may translate to something else. Specifically I have gone to google translate and saw the phoenetic translation. So the problem I'm facing is what exactly my last name would be in Greece, how I would write it, etc.

I have also heard that it was common for names to be incorrectly written when immigrants came through Ellis island in NY, where my grandfather came in. However, when looking through directories and business in Greek, I have seen this same common spelling Gikas. Any idea how I can figure this out more?

Was your last name possibly shortened when entering the US?

I have wondered that myself, I suppose I can only figure that out by getting into actual records through one of the online geneology websites. Thats why I was interested if my name as it is spelled was common, which Konstantinos seems to adress.

Ηλιας Γκικας... it is how it would be in Greek but... there is a posibility that it is... Ηλιας Γκεκας.

Both is pretty common here.

There is a posibility to be shortened as Thanasis said but because this last names actually exist in Greece as it is... Γκικας or Γκεκας... probable is just that.

Good luck to your search

My sister Caroline makes a mean pork tenderloin, or should I say tenderloins. She's made it in so many ways and with various sauces such as apple, raspberry, mustard cream - you name it, she’s probably tried it. Today she made it in one of my favorite ways - Greek style, which is also one of the easier ways to…
