Rio Summer Olympics Greek Athlete Recap for August 10, 2016

(Greece) – Greece participated in several events on Day 5 of the Summer Olympics in Rio on August 10, 2016 but the medal count is still at 2 overall Olympic medals, with shooter Anna Korakaki winning the gold medal in the 25 meter pistol event and a bronze medal in the 10 meter pistol event.

The Group A water polo match between Hungary and Greece ended in an 8-8 draw and Greece is currently listed as being in second place behind Brazil in the overall water polo standings. They advance to the quarterfinal round but the schedule for those games has yet to be established.

Greek judo competitor Ilias Iliadis lost his match against Cheng Xunzhao of China in Round 32 of the judo competition, which means that he won’t be advancing to the next level and has been eliminated.

Greek competitors are finding success in sailing. In the Men’s finn (dinghy) category, Greek competitor Ioannis Mitakis finished in third place in Race 3 of the preliminaries. Mitakis also competed in race 4 of the preliminaries in the same event and came in 2nd. He is currently in 4th place overall in the standings with 17 points. In the Men’s 470 (dinghy), Greek athletes Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis finished in 9th place in Race 1 of the preliminaries.

For swimming, Andreas Vazios swam in the heats for the Men’s 200 meter individual medley and came in 9th with a time of 1:59.33. Later on, he swam in the semifinals and came in 7th with a time of 1:59.24. He will not be able to advance to the finals.

Greece has a total of 92 athletes competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics. So far, it’s the Greek sailor, Ioannis Mitakis and the Greek Water Polo team who have a shot at taking home another medal for Greece in the upcoming days of the Olympic Games. There are still more events to come, as well!
