Rio Summer Olympics Greek Athlete Recap for August 11, 2016

(Greece) –  Greece participated in several events on Day 6 of the Rio Summer Olympics on August 11, 2016 and the medal count still stands at a total of two medals, 1 gold and 1 bronze, both of which were won by the shooter, Anna Korakaki.

For rowing, after the semifinals in the men’s coxless four, the Greek Olympic team was ranked number 5 overall. The Greek team also came in sixth in the finals of the men’s coxless lightweight four and missed the chance to earn a medal. In the finals of the women’s double sculls,  competitors Sofia Asoumanaki and Aikaterini Nikolaidou came in 4th and missed the chance to earn a medal be several seconds.

For sailing, in the mixed nacra 17 multihull sailing event, Greek team members S. Bekatorou and M. Peteniotis came in 16th in race 3 of the preliminaries. Ioannis Mitakis finished with a rank of 11 after race 6 of the preliminaries and in the men’s 470 (dinghy) competitors P. Mantis and K. Kagialis finished race 4 of the preliminaries with a rank of 5. In the mixed nacra 17 (multihull) sailing competition, Greek competitors finished with a rank of 11 during race 6 of the preliminaries.

In windsurfing, competitor Byron Kokkalinis finished race 8 of the preliminaries with a rank of 8. Angeliki Skarlatou finished race 8 of the preliminaries with a rank of 20.

For swimming, Kristian Gkolomeev finished the heats with a rank of 10, which means that he won’t advance to the next level of competition. He also finished with a rank of 6 in the semifinals of the men’s 50 meter freestyle. He is not scheduled to compete in any more events.

The Greek Olympic team has 92 athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Greek athletes still have many events to compete in, such as in track and field, and look forward to earning more medals at this year’s games.
