Rio Summer Olympics Greek Athlete Recap for August 12-14, 2016

(Greece) –  Greece participated in several events on Days 7, 8, and 9 of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro from August 12, 2016 to August 14, 2016 and the medal count still stands at a total of two medals, 1 gold and 1 bronze, both of which were won by the shooter, Anna Korakaki.

In Track and Field, there were several events that Greek athletes participated in over the weekend. In the women’s 10,000m finals, Alexi Pappas finished the race with a rank of 17. In the men’s 20 kilometer walk finals, Alexandros Papamichail finished with a rank of 20. In the woman’s marathon final, Ourania Rebouli finished the race in 2:46:32 with a rank of 88. In the women’s triple jump final, Paraskevi Papachristou finished in 8th place.

All the sailing teams are still competing and are in various stages of their events. At the close of the weekend, Byron Kokkalanis, the windsurfer, placed 8th in the finals for the RS:X competition. The Men’s 470 sailing races will continue on Monday.

In the rowing finals, the Greek team competing in the men’s coxless 4 event finished in 8th place and missed their chance for a medal. In weightlifting in the men’s 85 kilogram finals, Greek weightlifter Theodoros Iakavidis also missed the chance to medal. After the weekend’s water polo match ups, Greece is currently in second place and they are scheduled to play Italy on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 in the quaterfinal round. The swimming competitions have ended without any Greek athletes earning a medal.

Although the weekend closed without any medals, the Greek athletes stand a shot at winning future medals. They currently have 92 athletes competing in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Although this number is down considerably from other years, the athletes have trained for their sports and are eager to test their limits and try for a shot at winning another medal for Greece.
