Rio Summer Olympics Greek Athlete Recap for August 19-21, 2016

(Greece) – The Greek Olympic Team had a successful finish from Days 14-16 of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. They increased their medal count by another gold with Ekaterini Stefanidi’s strong performance in the women’s pole vault compeition. The team also has two additional gold medals with Eleftherios Petrounas’ first place finish in the men’s rings and Anna Korakaki’s win in one of the shooting competitions. Korakaki also won a bronze medal in another of the shooting events. Spyridon Giannotis also won a silver medal for Greece in the 10 kilometer marathon swim. The Men’s 470 dinghy sailors also won a bronze medal for Greece.

The rest of the track and field competitors had fairly strong finishes to their races, but Stefanidi is the only one who medaled. Alexandros Papamichail finished the men’s 50 kilometer race walk in 28th place. Antigoni Drisbioti finished with a rank of 15 in the women’s 15 kilometer race walk finals. Hristoforos Merousis finished in 116th place in the finals of the men’s marathon.

In rhythmic gymnastics, Varvara Filiou was ranked in 15th place at the end of the qualifications round. The Greek women’s rhythmic gymnastics team placed with a rank of 13 in the qualifications round of the team all-around. In Cycling, Dimitrios Antoniadis finished in 31st place of the men’s cross-country competition. Finally, the Greek water polo team lost their final match to Hungary, which resulted in them finishing in 5th place in the overall rankings.

Although the Greek Olympic Team only had 92 athletes competing in various sports during the 2016 Summer Olympics, the athletes who made it on the team gave it everything they had. In 2004, when Greece hosted the games,  The final medal count for Greece is 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 2 bronze medals. The athletes look forward to going back to Greece with their medals and to participate in their sports in the future.
