(Greece) – Anna Korakaki, the shooter who won a gold and bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, has added two more medals to her growing list. This past weekend, she competed in the ISF World Cup Final in Bologna, Italy and added a gold and silver medal to her collection.
She won the gold medal on Friday in the 25 meter pistol event and the silver medal on Saturday in the 10 meter air pistol event. Earlier, she broke the world record in the finals of the 10 meter air pistol event before winning the silver medal in the finals. Several members of the Greek government extended their congratulations to Korakaki after her wins.
Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the President of the Hellenic republic, said, “Your new world-class success and the world record that seals it show the path that belongs to you: always to the top. My warm congratulations.”
Stavros Kontonis, the Greek Deputy Sports Minister also extended his congratulations. In his message, he talked about not only her recent medals, but the ones she earned in Rio. He said that, “continues to keep the Greek flag at the top of the world and makes us all proud. After her double and unmatched success at the Olympic Games in Rio, she won two medals at the World Cup in Bologna as well. She deserves the warm congratulations and respect of all Greeks, given that apart from her competition successes, she succeeds in showing remarkable steadiness and staying at the top internationally, an element that marks the great personalities of world sport.”
The Deputy Sports Minister also went on to recognize Tasos Korakakis, Anna’s father and coach, by saying, “Once again, ‘well done’ to golden Anna and her coach and father Tasos Korakakis.”
Korakaki was the first athlete from Greece during the Rio Olympics to win a medal. She is only twenty years old and in order to win first place, she beat out several experienced shooters who have won in previous Olympic Games. That was her first Olympic Games. After her recent wins at the ISF World Cup, she’s earning her place as one of the top competitors in the world in shooting.
