(Patmos, Greece) – Travel + Leisure, a lifestyle magazine geared towards those who love to travel for fun, has listed Patmos as one of the most romantic destinations in the world. The Greek island of Patmos is listed as number 17 out of 50.

According to the Travel + Leisure website, one of their main draws about the island is that it is only accessible by boat, which manages to cut down on some of the crowds that other Greek islands have during the summer. They say that despite the fact that Patmos can be difficult to access, there are some considerable awards.

They say, “Just 14 square miles, this tiny island of the Dodecanese archipelago is only accessible via boat. The rewards, however, are well worth the trip.” They go on to say that the rich history, calm atmosphere, and gorgeous beaches are well suited for those who are looking for a romantic getaway.

One of their favorite destinations on the island is Chora, “a walled hilltop village that’s a maze of interlinked courtyards, chapels, and whitewashed mansions—one of which serves as the town’s only hotel.” They also like the fact that, “Patmos has countless hidden coves and deserted beaches along its jigsaw coastline.”

In many ways, Patmos has a lot of things that other Greek islands have – beaches, great food, and a nice glimpse at the every day life of the Greek people. However, the island captivated the people at Travel + Leisure, which led them to reward the island with this honor.

All the destinations on their list of “The 50 Best Romantic Getaways” offer something unique and are well-suited for romance. Patmos is the only destination in Grece that made it. Other destinations include New York City, Maui in Hawaii, Napa Valley, Granada in Spain, the Yunnan Province in China,  and Vancouver, British Columbia.
