Greek Performers to Honor Greek War for Independence at the Epidaurus Festival

Epidaurus Festival 2016(Greece) – Well known Greek performers Stamatis Kraounakis, a composer, Eleni Ouzounidou, a singer, and the Spira-Spira Theater Company will hold a special performance at the Epidaurus Festival that will honor the Greek War of Independence. These artists have put together a special performance that was inspired by a well-known speech that was given by a hero of the war named Theodoros Koloktronis. His speech to young soldiers was given at the Pynx in Athens in 1838 and served to inspire a generation. Each of the performers bring their expertise to the stage.

Koloktronis was inspired by the revolutionary ideals that were part of the French Revolution. He is known for having said, “Give me the papers of the kneeling Greeks to the sultans and the traitors in every village across the nation to burn them. Every place and every village that betrays our nation and it’s long battle to freedom,I will smash it, burn it and destroy it!” Greece had endured 400 years of occupation by the Ottoman Empire before finally winning their independence. Heroes such as Koloktronis played a big part in securing Greece’s independence during that time. The performance at Epidaurus will be in remembrance of Koloktronis’ revolutionary thoughts and ideals.

The special performance will take place at the Little Theater of Epidaurus on Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16. On both days, the show will take place at 8:30 PM. Admission is 10 euros for students and 20 euros for everyone else. People are asked to buy their tickets in advance to secure a spot, otherwise it might be sold out. The performances are part of the official program at this year’s Epidaurus Festival. Purchase tickets online at and they can also be purchased at the official Epidaurus festival box office, which is located at 39 Panepistimiou Street in the Pesmazoglou Arcade.
