Greek Water Polo Team On Way to Gold Medal

FINA(Greece) – Greece needs just one more victory before they can secure the gold medal at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) men’s Water Polo World League Super Final which is taking place in Huizhou, China. The final games will be held on June 26, 2016 and if Greece wins the next two, they’ll secure the gold.

Last week, Greece secured a win against Australia, beating them 10-5. After the conclusion of the game, they became tied with Serbia for the top spot. To secure the win against Australia, Greece blocked several scoring attempts. They also gained 3 extra points from having 8 fouls. In the course of the game, Australia only scored one time out of ten when they had an extra man.

The Greeks said, “It was a very nice game. The Australian team is very strong but we played better than them today, in the extra-man goals and defense,” said Theodoros Vlachos, team captain. “The secret of our victory was the counter attacks and hard defense. I was happy that we won one more game. We will try to win every game, every day and build up our confidence.”

The Australian team lost against Italy and then bounced back to win against Japan. They logged another loss against Greece. On the other hand, the Greek team is currently undefeated. When Greece competes again, it will be for the gold medal. In the World League Super Final, teams such as Greece, Australia, the United States, Japan, Serbia, Brazil, and China are all competing to see who has the best water polo team. The competition began on June 21 and will conclude on June 26 when a winner is decided. Greece will play the United States in the semifinal round and Serbia will play Italy. Greece needs to win two more games before they earn the gold.
