Thessaloniki is not expensive at all, a bit cheaper than Athens. I would suggest you check out hotel prices on the internet.

When we lived in the States. now in Greece for many years, we had a TV man come to our home to set us up with a few Greek channels.

Greeks do not tip a lot. Basically, whatever change you get, you leave for the server, however, we always tip when out, just not as much as in the States.
