Cultural differences to be aware of while traveling to Greece

The most important meal of the day is lunch (eaten around 2), following that from 2:00-3:00 you need to be quiet. People take this period seriously and will not be happy if you're too noisy. I have heard stories of people having the cops called on them for not being quiet.

What are the most in demand jobs for Greek speakers?

That's going to be difficult, especially if you don't speak fluent Greek. Your best bet would be in Germany in a financial institution that deals with Greeks, a flight attendant, or the shipping industry. You could do credit analysis at one of the big three credit firms (moody's, fitch, S&P)...

What is your favorite Greek song? 🎶

There are too many to name.. some of the traditional songs I like: Άσπρο τριαντάφυλλο κρατώ (I'm holding a white rose) Στης Πάργας τον ανήφορο (uphill in Pargas) Βασιλικός θα γίνω (I will become basil) Σήμερα λάμπει ο ουρανός (the sky is shining) Βρέχει φωτιά στη στράτα μου (it's raining fire...

How much is the average price of a gyro in Greece?

It's very expensive given that the average Greek makes €600, euros a month and the cost of living (ignoring housing) is about the same as the USA.

How much is the average price of a gyro in Greece?

€2.50 before the high inflation. The government just increased prices to €4.50 back in March if I recall correctly.

What place in Greece do you regret travelling to?

Most Greeks in Greece cringe when they think about Mykonos - it's not greek, it's outrageously expensive, it's filled with tourists, and the locals who still live there don't even have a public beach available to them. I can keep going but I won't.

Check out this beautiful traditional Greek music and dance in Kefalonia

The song is Πω Πω Μαρία (Po Po Maria) and the dance looks like μπάλος κεφαλονιάς (kefalonian balos)

What place in Greece do you regret travelling to?

Well, the one place I know I'd regret going to is Mykonos, and that said, I have no intention of ever visiting. A close second is Spetses. I wouldn't say I regret goin there, I just didn't enjoy it that much. It's expensive and not worth the money for what the island offers.

Is there any good brand of packaged baklava?

Yes, klostari (κλωστάρι) baklava from Ioannina is probably my favorite baklava. As for finding one thats not too sweet, that'll be hard because it is "syropiasta" meaning it's a dessert made with a lot of syrup.

What is the one dance that you must know for a Greek wedding?

That depends on where the family is from, because that will determine the main style of dance. I went to a party from Crete once and it was nothing but Kritika (Cretan dances)... no nisiotika (dances from the other islands), no ipirotika (dances from Epirus), no piliotika (dances from Pilios)...

What is your favorite dish to order for mezze?

Saganaki me meli kai sousami (Saganaki with honey and sesame). Kalamaria is probably a close second.

Did you know that the Greek groom is supposed to buy his brides shoes?

Yes, but I'm not sure how widespread it is throughout Greece, but unlike America during out moment of silence, people get more emotional in our villages - they will start crying.

Did you know that the Greek groom is supposed to buy his brides shoes?

Hmm. Off the top of my head, we will put money and a baby in a bed before the wedding, there won't be any bridesmaids or groomsmen (we will only have 2 koumparoi - 1 koumparos and 1 koumpari). Because the wedding is in Greece, I will wait outside of the church for her and everyone will stand...

How to make different variations of Greek syrup/nut sweets

Syropiasta is something I love making. I've started adding pecans to my recipes because 1. I love pecans, and 2. Pecans aren't used in Greek dishes, so I like to see how it changes the flavors

Did you know that the Greek groom is supposed to buy his brides shoes?

My SO was born and raised in Greece, I was born and mostly raised in the USA. Our wedding is this summer and we won't be doing that because it's not the tradition in either of our family's villages.
