Walking around (or even biking) is one of the best leisurely wats to get to a know an island in Greece. That's why I love to visit Greek islands, is because you usually won't miss anything because everything is so quant and small and walkable. If anyone has any advice about the island of Kefalonia, I would love to know. My best tips that I have to visit in Kefalonia are Katovrahes and Melissani cave.

Lixouri for a vacation apartment?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia next summer with a big group — family and close friends, around 8–10 people total — and we’re thinking of renting a large vacation apartment or villa. Lixouri keeps popping up as an option, but I don’t know much about it beyond being across the bay from Argostoli.

Is Lixouri a good base for a group stay? We’d love to be somewhere with an authentic Greek feel, good local tavernas, walkable areas, and easy access to beaches. We’ll have a few cars, so driving to other parts of the island isn’t a problem, but we don’t want to feel too isolated either.

For anyone who’s stayed there — what’s your impression of Lixouri? Peaceful and charming or a bit too quiet? Would you recommend it for a larger group vacation?

Is Skala worth visiting?

I’m in the early stages of planning a trip to Kefalonia and starting to map out where to spend my time. One place that keeps coming up is Skala, but I’m not sure if it’s somewhere I should prioritize or just pass through.

From what I can tell, it seems to have a long sandy beach and a good range of restaurants, which sounds nice. At the same time, I’ve seen people say it’s a bit more built-up and touristy compared to other parts of the island.

I tend to enjoy places that feel relaxed and scenic, but I also appreciate having some options for food and an easy beach day. For those who have been, do you think Skala is worth visiting, or would you recommend focusing on other areas instead?

Best Tavernas with Sea Views on Kefalonia

One of the things I always look forward to when traveling in Greece is finding a taverna with a beautiful sea view. There’s just something about sitting outside, looking out over the water, and enjoying a long meal that makes the whole experience feel even more memorable.

I’m hoping to spend some time on Kefalonia and would love to hear your recommendations for tavernas where the view is part of the experience. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy—sometimes the simple places end up being the best—but a great setting overlooking the sea is always a bonus.

Whether it’s a spot above a beach, a harborfront table, or a hillside taverna looking out over the Ionian, I’d love to hear about it.

Unique Historical Sites of Kefalonia to Visit?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia and would love some input, especially from a history perspective. I’ve been to Greece quite a few times and have visited a lot of the more well-known historical sites on other islands and the mainland, but somehow I’ve never made it to Kefalonia.

I know it’s not always talked about in the same way as places like Crete or Rhodes when it comes to history, but I’m assuming there are still some really interesting spots to explore. I’ve come across mentions of the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos and a few Venetian-era sites, but I’m sure there’s more I’m missing.

Are there any lesser-known ruins, monasteries, or historic villages that are especially worth seeing? I’m particularly interested in places that have a strong sense of story or local significance.

Fiskardo vs. Assos: Which Do You Prefer?

I'm considering a trip to Kefalonia sometime in the future and am still in the information-gathering stage. One comparison that keeps coming up is Fiskardo versus Assos. Both look absolutely beautiful in photos, but they seem to have very different personalities.

Fiskardo appears to be larger, with more restaurants, boats, and activity, while Assos looks quieter and perhaps a little more traditional. Since I haven't finalized any plans yet, I'm curious what people who have visited think.

If you had to choose one, which would it be and why? Is one better for relaxing and enjoying the scenery? Does one have better food, beaches, or overall atmosphere? Would you stay overnight in either location, or are they better as day trips?
