Advice for shopping at local markets in Greece?

I’ve been to Greece a couple of times, but I realize I’ve mostly stuck to the big sightseeing spots and the more touristy souvenir shops. On my next trip, I’d love to slow down and really experience the local markets instead, the kind where locals buy their food, spices, or household items, not just trinkets for visitors.

I’ve seen photos of colorful produce stands, fish markets by the harbors, and even stalls selling herbs, olives, and cheeses that look incredible. But honestly, I don’t know the etiquette. Do you just browse and point to what you want, or is there more interaction expected? Is it better to go early in the morning? And what’s the best way to avoid overpaying or looking like a total tourist?

Any advice for shopping at Greek markets like a local? Favorite ones you’ve visited?

Greek markets are such a joy! I always try to go when I am in Greece. The best time to go is early in the morning when everything is freshest and locals are doing their daily shopping. You can absolutely browse, but don’t be shy about interacting. Most vendors appreciate when you take a genuine interest in their products.

You’ll typically point to what you’d like, and they’ll weigh it for you. There is no need to touch the produce yourself. Prices are usually fair, but if something feels high, you can politely ask “poso?” to clarify. Cash is still preferred, and small bills are handy. They don't seem to like it when overhanding the produce.

You can also find clothes and even jewelry! I've got souvenirs to bring back at the markets. It's all similar stuff as what's in the shops but a lot cheaper than the shops, especially the tourist ones.
