I’ve been to Greece a couple of times, but I realize I’ve mostly stuck to the big sightseeing spots and the more touristy souvenir shops. On my next trip, I’d love to slow down and really experience the local markets instead, the kind where locals buy their food, spices, or household items, not just trinkets for visitors.

I’ve seen photos of colorful produce stands, fish markets by the harbors, and even stalls selling herbs, olives, and cheeses that look incredible. But honestly, I don’t know the etiquette. Do you just browse and point to what you want, or is there more interaction expected? Is it better to go early in the morning? And what’s the best way to avoid overpaying or looking like a total tourist?

Any advice for shopping at Greek markets like a local? Favorite ones you’ve visited?

Greek markets are such a joy! I always try to go when I am in Greece. The best time to go is early in the morning when everything is freshest and locals are doing their daily shopping. You can absolutely browse, but don’t be shy about interacting. Most vendors appreciate when you take a genuine interest in their products.

You’ll typically point to what you’d like, and they’ll weigh it for you. There is no need to touch the produce yourself. Prices are usually fair, but if something feels high, you can politely ask “poso?” to clarify. Cash is still preferred, and small bills are handy. They don't seem to like it when overhanding the produce.

You can also find clothes and even jewelry! I've got souvenirs to bring back at the markets. It's all similar stuff as what's in the shops but a lot cheaper than the shops, especially the tourist ones.

What are your favorite Greek destinations?

I’m curious — what are your top destinations in Greece? 🇬

I’ve been a few times and absolutely fell in love with the mix of ancient history, island beauty, and everyday village life. Athens will always have my heart (especially wandering through Plaka at night), but I’m hoping to plan another trip soon and want to explore beyond the usual spots.

If you could go back to one place in Greece tomorrow, where would it be? Bonus points if you share your favorite meal or local experience there!

My favorites so far: Crete, Santorini, Meteora, Thessaloniki - I have so much more to see.

Favorite Places to Visit in Greece for Authentic Culture

I’m of Greek descent and absolutely love visiting Greece, there’s nothing like being there. But I’ll be honest… I’m starting to feel a little burned out by the super touristy spots. I’ve done Santorini, Mykonos, and the major cities, and while they’re beautiful, I’m craving something different, places where the pace is slower, the food tastes like yiayia’s, and people still speak in local dialects.

I want to experience the heart of Greek culture, the village squares, panigyria under the stars, little churches tucked into the hills, and family-run tavernas where they don’t even have menus. I’m open to mountain towns, islands, or regions on the mainland, just something a bit more real. Where do you think it would be a good place to visit?

Greece Island Hopping Advice?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Greece later this year and could really use some advice on island hopping logistics and itinerary ideas. I’m thinking of starting with a few days in Athens to explore the history and vibe of the city, then heading to Crete and Santorini — both have been on my list forever. I’m also hoping to add one more island to the mix (not Mykonos though).

I’d love suggestions for that “third” island — ideally something beautiful but not overly crowded, with some culture, beaches, or unique charm. I’ve heard good things about Naxos, Paros, and even Milos. Any thoughts on which might be the best fit, especially given I’ll be doing this all in about 10–12 days?

Seeing an Ancient Greek Play while in Greece?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Greece and would love to see an ancient Greek play while I’m there—something staged in an open-air ancient theater, like Epidaurus or even Herodes Atticus in Athens. It’s been a dream of mine to experience a classic tragedy or comedy under the stars in the kind of venue it was originally performed in.

I was wondering if anyone has tips for how to plan for this. Do these performances only happen during certain months or festivals? Do I need to buy tickets far in advance? Also, are the plays typically performed in modern or ancient Greek—and is it still enjoyable if you don’t speak fluent Greek?

Any advice on what to bring, where to sit, or how to make the most of the experience would be amazing. I’d really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

Suggested 10-Day Itinerary for Corfu and Athens?

Hi everyone! I’m starting to plan a possible trip to Greece, either this fall or early next summer, and would love some itinerary advice. I’m Greek but haven’t explored much of the country beyond family visits, so this trip feels special.

I’m currently thinking of splitting the time between Corfu and Athens, but I’m not sure how best to divide the 10 days. Would 4 days in Corfu and 4 in Athens (plus travel days) be balanced, or would you suggest more time in one over the other?

Also, would it be worth adding a third destination to make the most of the trip? Maybe a mainland spot like Nafplio or Meteora, or another island that's easy to reach?
