If I rent a car in Athens, do you think that I would be able to put it on a ferry to go to another island, like Crete?

My next trip to Greece is going to include visiting a bunch of people in Athens, not all of whom are in convenient locations to the metro, and then head to Crete. I like to have a car on Crete because I want to explore. I don't want to have to rent a car in two different places. Any suggestions?

Driving and parking in Athens is not easy. Moreover, there is not only the metro in Athens, there are buses, tramways and trolleybuses, I would be surprised if the people you want to see, if they live in Athens, are not close to these transports. .
The bus, trolleybus, metro, tram ticket costs €1.20 for 90 minutes.

Many rental companies won't let you take the car on a ferry, or they will ask you to pay extra insurance.
You will have to pay the price of the ferry ticket for the car which is almost twice as expensive as a passenger ticket, and in addition you will pay rental days for nothing since your car will be on the ferry (the trip Piraeus - Crete takes at least 8 hours), while it is very easy to rent one once you arrive in Crete with a local rental company.

I agree with this. I would recommend checking with the people you plan to stay with about public transport options hear them. I have had some harrowing experiences trying to drive in Athens. I am just not used to the driving style. I have rented cars and driven in the smaller places of Greece, but I stay away from cities because it's so damned stressful. If I can't find a way to do it with public transport like the metro or a bus, I get a taxi.

Monasteries to visit near Athens?

I am interested in visiting some religious sites in Greece. I've written in different threads that I have been interested in Meteora.

I will be staying in Athens for most of the time but I am cool with doing day trips or overnights in other places. I am getting an Air BnB for a few weeks so there is some flexibility there.

Doing preliminary research, this is what I have come up with:

Daphni Monastery - The Dafni Monastery is one of the most important Byzantine monasteries in Greece and is not far outside of Athens.. The monastery's main attraction is the stunning Byzantine mosaics that adorn its walls and ceilings.

Monastery of Kaisariani - this monastery is also pretty close to Athens on the slopes of Mount Hymettus. I hear a must-see is its beautiful courtyard and garden, which is filled with fragrant flowers and lush greenery. Visitors can also admire the impressive architecture and explore the surrounding landscape.

Monastery of Penteli - this monastery is located on a hill overlooking the city. It was founded in the 16th century and was once a center of learning and culture. Today, the monastery is a popular destination for visitors who are interested in its architecture and the impressive views from its rooftop terrace.

Do you have anything to add?

Beach Weather Year Round in Greece?

Peak season is over, and I might need to go to Greece in a few weeks. I have never been at this time of year. Is it still beach weather in the Athens area?

I know it might still be beach weather in Crete, but I am not sure I will have enough time to get down there.

The weather is getting cold where I live, and getting some sun will feel fantastic, beach or not.

Winter Travel Tips to Greece

I think I am going to end up in Greece through Christmas to visit some people.

I am thinking I want to go skiing!

Where is it that Greeks typically go skiing. I know that there are some places to go, but I want to go where it is the most popular.

Also, are there any Christmas markets?

Greece at Christmas?

I think I might want to visit Greece for Christmas this year. Do you have any tips? Some things I am thinking:

  • Seems I might want to be there for a month? Maybe from December 6 to January 6? From what I understand that is considered "the season"
  • I of course want to go to church - especially on key feast days
  • I will likely be staying near Athens with some friends
  • Does anywhere in Greece have any great Christmas markets?

Does Greece Have "Autumn"?

I always wondered - is there an autumn season in Greece?

I know that someplace like Crete - maybe not since it stays hot well into October. But Maybe in the mountains?

I might visit Greece next year in early October, and I plan to stay further North in the mainlands. Just trying to figure out what to expect.
