Beaches in the Athens Riviera

I have to go to Athens for a business trip and I won't have time to tour around Greece. I'll only be there maybe 5 nights. I want to go to the beach, though, since it's summer!

I would love some recommendations on the best beaches to visit. I'm looking for a mix of beautiful scenery, good amenities, and perhaps a few spots that are less crowded. Here are a few specifics I'm considering:

1. Family-friendly beaches: Any spots that are particularly good for families with kids?

2. Secluded beaches: Are there any hidden gems where I can avoid the crowds?

3. Water sports: I'm interested in trying some water sports, so suggestions for beaches where these are available would be great.

4. Beach bars and restaurants: Any suggestions for beaches that have great food and drink options nearby?

The Athens Riviera has some fantastic beaches for you to enjoy. For family-friendly beaches, try Vouliagmeni Beach. It has shallow waters, playgrounds, and plenty of amenities, making it perfect for kids.

If you’re looking for secluded spots, head to Kavouri Beach. It’s a bit quieter and offers beautiful scenery without the crowds. Another hidden gem is KAPE Beach, near Sounion, which is more remote but incredibly picturesque.

For water sports, Varkiza Beach is a great choice. It has facilities for windsurfing, paddleboarding, and more. Plus, the vibe is energetic and fun.

If you want beach bars and restaurants, Astir Beach is top-notch. It’s a bit upscale but has excellent dining options and a luxurious atmosphere.

How walkable is Athens?

I’m thinking about visiting Athens this year and trying to figure out how easy it is to get around on foot. I usually prefer walking when I travel, especially in cities where you can explore neighborhoods naturally without relying too much on transportation.

How walkable is Athens overall? Are the main areas like Plaka, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis close enough to each other to comfortably walk between them, or is it more spread out than it looks?

I’m also wondering where it makes the most sense to stay if I want to rely mostly on walking. Would it still be worth using the metro, or even renting a car, or is that unnecessary for a short trip?

Best Places for Sunset in Athens?

I realized recently that even though I visit Athens about once a year, I’ve never actually paid attention to the sunset there. I don’t have a trip planned at the moment, I’m just gathering ideas for the future, but now I’m curious about the best places in the city to watch the sun go down.

Are there classic spots locals love? I’ve heard of Lycabettus Hill and some rooftop bars, but I’m sure there are lesser-known viewpoints, coastal areas, or even neighborhood corners that offer beautiful light in the evening. I’d also love to know if certain places are better at different times of year or if the atmosphere changes depending on whether you’re in the center or closer to the Athens Riviera.

If you had to recommend your favorite places for a memorable sunset in Athens, where would you send someone who’s finally ready to pay attention?

Is Kolonaki worth visiting?

I'm planning another trip to Athens and keep hearing good things about Kolonaki. I've walked through Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma several times over the years, but I've never really spent much time exploring Kolonaki.

For those who have visited, is it worth adding to my itinerary? I've heard it's a more upscale neighborhood with great cafés, restaurants, shopping, and a different atmosphere than the more tourist-focused areas. I'm wondering if it's the kind of place where you can spend a relaxed afternoon wandering around or if it's mainly for luxury shopping.

If you recommend visiting, what shouldn't I miss? I'd love suggestions for cafés, bakeries, restaurants, viewpoints, or any hidden gems nearby. I'd also be interested in hearing what makes Kolonaki stand out compared to other neighborhoods in Athens.

Favorite day trips from Athens?

I was talking to someone recently about Athens and realized that a lot of people use it mostly as a base before heading to the islands, but there seem to be so many good day trips nearby that don’t get discussed as much.

The obvious ones like Delphi, Hydra, Nafplio, Cape Sounion, and Aegina always come up, but I’m curious which places people actually enjoyed the most once they went. Sometimes the smaller or less hyped trips end up being the most memorable.

I’m especially interested in places that are realistically doable in a single day without feeling rushed. Could be history-focused, food-focused, beach towns, mountain villages, or even somewhere mostly known for the scenery and atmosphere.

Would love to hear everyone’s favorite day trips from Athens, especially places that surprised you once you got there.

Day Trips from Athens Locals Love

I’ll be spending some time in Athens and would love to understand where locals actually go when they want a break from the city. I’m not looking for the standard tourist excursions, but the kinds of day trips people choose when they just need a change of scenery, fresh air, or a slower pace for an afternoon.

Are there nearby towns, coastal spots, mountains, or historical areas that Athenians return to again and again? Places that feel easy, familiar, and restorative rather than “must-see” destinations. I’m especially curious about trips that don’t require much planning or an overnight stay.
