Cretans have the most philotimo out of all Greeks!

There is really something special about Cretans...they are a little more philotimi than the average Greek person. They have so much pride, culture and care for one another. It seems like the rest of Greece is going in a different directions but Cretans are holding on to our traditional ways. Kudos to them, they are an example of progress without losing values

Potamos beach in Malia harbor Crete is a quiet escape

Potamos beach is a very small beach in Malia Harbor. The beach is great because there aren't many organize beach clubs, meaning that you're able to just come to the beach with your own towels and umbrellas and stay for free. There are usually people walking around selling things, and you can always walk by it's the nearest store to pick up some cold bottle drinks. I highly recommend speech if you're looking for something more low-key and quiet.

Rizinia is a lost ancient city in Crete

Over the years, there have been many texts that talk about ancient city in Crete called Rizinia. The existence of the city was unable to be confirmed from archeological artefacts until the 1900s when Italian archeologists found remnants of the city. Many of the artefacts from the sites are found in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion where are you can go and visit them today. I definitely recommend checking them out.

Understanding the Cretan vs standard Greek dialects

Cretan is a very distinct dialect that is spoken on the island of Crete. Many think that it is reminiscent of Cypriot Greek but in my opinion they are pretty different. Having spent some time in Greece two summers ago, I appreciate how different all of the different dialects in Greece are. So many aspects of the Cretan dialect reflect how unique the Cretan culture is. Crete has a strong military history and background as well as a strong agricultural industry. All of these are present in the dialect!

How to spend 5 days in Crete

Crete is one of those places that requires at least 5 days, but in my opinion it's best to go for at least one week, especially if you want to travel to all of the different cities. As always with Crete, I recommend renting a car and traveling to the different parts. This video shows a good outline of what can be done in a few days, the only thing that would take away is visiting Spinalonga island, in my opinion its not worth it and there's not much to see, only if youre very interested in the history.

Imbros Gorge is a beautiful part of Cretes natural beauty

Crete has some of the most beautiful natural beauty in all of Greece!! Imbros Gorge is a trail that almost reaches 8 kilometres and it is a bit easier to hike than Samaria gorge. You can always take a tour if you are unsure about where to go and if you are scared to get lost. Tours are also a great way to learn more about the history of the island and get to know a bit more from the locals. Cretans are very hospitable and love to sit down with you and drink some raki.
