Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Crete this September and would love some tips and advice. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful time to visit—still warm, but less crowded than peak summer—and I’m hoping to experience the island a bit differently.

I’m looking for destinations that are a little more off the beaten path. While I do want to see some of the famous sites like Chania or Elafonissi, I’m especially drawn to quiet villages, hidden beaches, mountain drives, and local food spots that don’t feel touristy.

Are there towns or regions you recommend that have an authentic feel in September? Any special festivals or local events happening that time of year? I’m also open to hiking trails, archaeological sites beyond Knossos, or lesser-known beaches with a taverna nearby.

September is a wonderful time to visit Crete. You’re right, the weather is still gorgeous, the sea is warm, and the crowds have thinned out just enough to make exploring feel special. For a quieter, authentic experience, I highly recommend spending time in the villages around the Amari Valley near Rethymno—places like Thronos and Meronas offer mountain views, traditional food, and kind locals.

For hidden beaches, try Xerokambos in the southeast or Kedrodasos near Elafonissi, which is less crowded than its famous neighbor. Loutro, on the south coast, is only accessible by boat or foot and has a magical, slow vibe in September.

If you’re up for hiking, the Aradena Gorge is stunning and less busy than Samaria. Keep an eye out for local harvest festivals in smaller villages—especially around wine or raki. And don’t skip a visit to an old kafeneio for a quiet coffee among locals. You’ll love it.
 
September is a great time to visit Crete—less crowded, still warm. I used https://www.cretarent.gr/ for car rental and explored beaches and villages with total freedom. Highly recommended!

Good Souvenirs to Bring Back from Crete?

I might be heading to Crete this fall (fingers crossed!) and I’m already thinking ahead to souvenirs. I’d love to bring back some meaningful or useful items — not just touristy stuff — and maybe even a few gifts for friends and family.

If you’ve been to Crete, what do you recommend picking up while I’m there? Are there certain foods, crafts, or locally made products that are especially worth it? I’ve heard olive oil is amazing, but what else should I look out for?

I’m especially interested in items with a cultural or handmade feel, maybe something I wouldn’t easily find elsewhere in Greece. Would love to hear what others brought home and what you wish you had bought more of! Any specific shops, markets, or local producers you'd recommend checking out?

Which Crete Beach Do You Like Best? Elafonissi vs. Balos?

I’m still in the research phase for a future trip to Crete, and I keep going back and forth between Elafonissi and Balos, both look absolutely unreal. Elafonissi has that pink-tinted sand and turquoise shallows that seem straight out of a dream, but Balos looks wild and untouched, with those sweeping lagoon views and that little islet in the background.

For anyone who’s actually been, which one left a bigger impression on you in person? Is one easier to reach or less crowded during peak season? I’ve read the road to Balos can be rough, is it worth the drive? Would you base yourself in Chania for both, or stay closer to one? Curious what locals or repeat visitors think!

Best Swimming Beach Near Chania?

I’ll be spending some time in Chania soon and would love recommendations for the best swimming beaches nearby. I’ve read about Elafonissi and Balos, but they both seem like day trips rather than places you can just wander to for a morning swim. I’m curious if there are any great beaches closer to town, something with clear water, easy access, and maybe a little taverna or café nearby for lunch afterward.

Some people mention Agii Apostoli or Chrissi Akti as local favorites, but I’d love to hear real experiences. Are they calm enough for relaxed swimming, or are there better spots just outside the city? I’m not looking for nightlife, just a beautiful, clean place to swim and unwind for a few hours. Bonus points if there’s shade or fewer crowds. What’s your go-to beach around Chania for a perfect swim?

Ferry from Athens to Crete Question

I might be going to Crete this summer and I am thinking about taking the overnight ferry from Piraeus instead of flying. I’ve never taken a long ferry ride in Greece before, so I’d love some advice from people who’ve done it.

Is it worth booking a cabin, or are the airplane-style seats comfortable enough for a night crossing? I’ve heard mixed things. Also, how early should I arrive at the port—especially if I’m traveling as a foot passenger?

I’m also curious about which ferry company people prefer—Anek, Blue Star, Minoan? Are there big differences in comfort, cleanliness, or punctuality?

I’ll be heading to either Heraklion or Chania, still deciding. If you’ve done both routes, is one better than the other in terms of views, schedule, or overall experience?
