I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia this summer, and I’ve heard the island has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. I’d love to hear your recommendations—what’s your favorite beach in Kefalonia, and what makes it so special?

I know Myrtos Beach is famous for its dramatic scenery, but I’m also curious about other spots—hidden coves, family-friendly beaches, or great places for swimming and snorkeling. Are there any less crowded gems you’d recommend?

I’d also love tips on what to bring (like umbrellas or food), whether parking is an issue, and if any beaches are better suited for calm waters or stunning sunsets.

Looking forward to hearing your favorite picks! Your advice will help me make the most of my trip and explore some incredible spots.

Myrtos Beach is breathtaking and a must-visit, but for something quieter, check out Petani Beach on the Paliki Peninsula. It has a similar dramatic vibe with turquoise waters and white pebbles, but it’s often less crowded. Arrive early for parking, and bring water shoes as the pebbles can be tricky.

For snorkeling, head to Foki Beach near Fiskardo. It’s a peaceful, shady cove with crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. Perfect for families too! Antisamos Beach, near Sami, is another excellent spot with calm waters, sunbeds, and nearby tavernas for food.

If you’re chasing sunsets, Xi Beach is fantastic with its unique reddish sand. The shallow waters make it kid-friendly, and the clay-rich sand is great for a DIY spa experience!

Most beaches have parking, but bringing an umbrella, snacks, and plenty of water is a good idea, especially for remote spots.

If you want a family friendly but little known sandy beach, Kaminia and Mounda are best. Shallow warm water with fine sand . Plenty parking but you need to arrive there early as it fills up. If you have a 4x4 car it's easier to park on the side of the road that is sandy.
If you want to go snorkeling nearby Kakava is hard to beat but you need to go on a boat, a big reef couple miles offshore from Mounda point. If you look it up there are boats that will take you there. There are lots of very old shipwrecks there, the depth is from 3-10 meters and the water is crystal clear in the summer months.
If you are lucky you may spot a loggerhead turtle.
Nearby Katelios has lots of tavernas by the sea . Skala is close by with lots of accommodation to suit all budgets and very busy fine pebble beach .
All the well known beaches in Kefallinia are very crowded in summer, August is the busiest month.
If you fly to the island rent a car at the airport. Don't use an agency, book direct with the rental company . The biggest one with 500 cars is Pefanis, book early especially if you want automatic.
You don't need international drivers permit if you are from Canada, just your current Canadian license.

Is Fiscardo worth staying overnight?

I’ve been looking into Kefalonia as a possible destination and keep coming across photos of Fiscardo. It looks pretty with its colorful buildings, a scenic harbor, and that classic Ionian charm. But I’m wondering, is it actually worth staying overnight there, or is it more of a daytime stop?

Some people say it’s a must for a night or two, while others say it’s too touristy and expensive for what you get. I’m trying to figure out if it would feel relaxing and special in the evenings once the crowds clear out, or if it’s better to base somewhere else and just drive in for a visit.

If you’ve stayed in Fiscardo (or decided not to), I’d love to hear your honest take. Would you go back? Or would you spend more time in places like Assos, Lixouri, or Sami instead?

Best Coastal Drives in Kefalonia?

I’ve been looking at photos and maps of Kefalonia lately, and what really stands out is how dramatic the coastline seems from above. The cliffs, the sharp turns, the sudden views of turquoise water — it feels like the kind of island where the drive itself is part of the experience.

That made me curious about the best coastal routes on the island. Not just the famous viewpoints, but the actual stretches of road that are especially beautiful to follow. Are there particular drives where the scenery keeps unfolding the entire way? Sections that feel wild and untouched versus more polished and built up?

I’ve heard different opinions about the road between Argostoli and Fiskardo, and also about the western side near Petani and Myrtos. For those who know the island well, which coastal drives truly stand out, and at what time of day do they feel most special?

Info About Petani Beach on Kefalonia?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia this summer and have been looking into Petani Beach. From photos, it looks incredible, the cliffs, the water color, and the whole setting seem really dramatic, almost like a quieter version of Myrtos.

I’m curious what it’s actually like in peak summer though. Does it get very crowded, or is it still possible to enjoy it without feeling packed in? I’ve also heard the drive down is pretty steep and winding, was it manageable or a bit stressful?

Another thing I’m wondering about is the water. I’ve read that it can get deep quickly and sometimes has waves, did that impact swimming at all?

Driving Advice in Kefalonia?

I’m of Greek descent and visit Greece almost every year, so I’m no stranger to renting a car and getting around. but I’ve never driven in Kefalonia before. I’m thinking about making the trip next summer, though it’s not 100% decided yet, and I’m wondering what to expect.

I’ve heard that Kefalonia has some narrow, winding mountain roads, especially around Myrtos Beach and heading toward Assos. Is it really challenging to drive there, or is it manageable if you take it slow? How are the road conditions overall? Are there plenty of signs in English as well as Greek?

Also, what’s parking like in popular areas such as Fiskardo, Argostoli, and near the major beaches? I’m used to village driving on the mainland, but islands can be different.

Off the Beaten Track Beaches in Kefalonia

I’m starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia, and while I know there are some famous beaches on the island, I’m much more interested in finding places that feel a little more off the beaten track. The kind of beaches where you might need to drive a bit farther, walk down a path, or just put in a little extra effort, but in return you get fewer crowds and a more natural atmosphere.

I don’t mind if there aren’t many amenities. In fact, I usually prefer beaches that feel untouched rather than highly organized with rows of umbrellas and beach bars. Clear water, beautiful scenery, and a peaceful vibe matter more to me than convenience.

Are there any beaches in Kefalonia that you’d recommend that fit this description? Maybe hidden coves, quieter stretches of coastline, or places locals tend to go?
