I grew up in a Greek household, and one thing we always look forward to after a big meal is the little “something sweet” to finish it off. Personally, I tend to keep it light, like fresh seasonal fruit, a small bowl of Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, or maybe a slice of galaktoboureko if I’m feeling indulgent. Even though galaktoboureko is rich, it somehow feels lighter than chocolate cakes or other heavy desserts, probably because of the semolina custard.
I’ve noticed that in many tavernas, they’ll bring out fruit or a small spoon sweet after dinner, and I love that tradition. It’s just enough to cleanse the palate without making you feel stuffed.
What’s your favorite Greek dessert to enjoy after a heavy meal? Do you also go for lighter options, or do you prefer something decadent no matter what came before?
