I already decided to visit the Samaria Gorge. I won't do the whole hike, but rather hike into the gorge from the village.

Now, I am looking for some other experiences to do that involve the outdoors? I know that Crete is so pretty, and I want to spend some time in nature while on the island.

The island is beautiful - I would take a tour or hire a taxi driver to show you around. Besides Samaria Gorge there's Preveli Lake, Dikteon Cave (Cave of Zeus), White Mountains (Lefki), some of the many beaches... I've also rented a car and driven around - the island is pretty everywhere!

I think that you ought to learn more about the island, you can do this at www.lovingcrete.com and then take your pick. Not everything is perfect in Crete so it is always better to know exactly where to go and what appeals to you

Unique nature spots in Crete?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Crete soon and while I definitely want to see some of the famous places like Elafonisi and Samaria Gorge, I’m also really interested in discovering unique, lesser-known nature spots on the island.

Are there any places you’ve been to that feel like hidden gems? Maybe a quiet beach, a lush forest, a scenic drive, or a peaceful gorge that doesn’t get as much attention as the big names?

I’d love to hear your recommendations for off-the-beaten-path nature experiences—especially places that feel untouched or especially magical. Bonus points if they’re good for a picnic or some peaceful walking.

Also curious if there are any interesting caves, natural springs, or mountain villages with beautiful surroundings worth checking out. Thanks so much!

Advice for Renting a Car in Crete?

I’m planning a trip to Crete and from what I’ve read, renting a car seems like the best way to explore the island without relying on taxis or public transport. I want to make sure I do it right, so I’d love some advice from those who have done it before!

What’s the best way to book—should I reserve online in advance, or are local agencies better for deals? Any recommendations for reliable rental companies? Also, what’s the situation with insurance—do I need full coverage, or is the basic package enough?

I’ve heard that driving in Crete is generally fine but can have some tricky mountain roads. Any tips for navigating safely? Lastly, how’s parking in towns like Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion?

Good Snorkeling Places on Crete?

I’m planning a trip to Crete and would love to include some snorkeling in my itinerary. With its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life, Crete seems like a snorkeler’s paradise, but I’m unsure where to start.

Are there specific beaches or coves you’d recommend for snorkeling? I’ve heard Balos Lagoon and Elafonisi are beautiful, but are they good for snorkeling, or are there better spots? I’m particularly interested in places where I can see vibrant underwater scenery, fish, or maybe even interesting rock formations or caves.

If you have any tips about snorkeling tours or places where I can rent gear, that would be super helpful too! Bonus points for quiet or less crowded spots, as I’m looking for a peaceful experience.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Advice for Road Trip Across Crete?

I’ll be spending 10 days on Crete this summer, and I’d love some advice on planning a road trip across the island! My goal is to stay in a few different, notable places for a couple of days each, to experience as much of Crete’s unique charm as possible.

I’m thinking of starting in Heraklion to explore Knossos Palace and the Archaeological Museum, but where should I go from there? Should I include Chania, Rethymno, or the south coast? Any must-visit villages, beaches, or historical sites along the way?

I’d also appreciate tips for scenic driving routes and local restaurants to try in smaller towns. Is it easy to find accommodations on the go, or should I book ahead? I'll be going in early June.
