I am visiting Greece this summer and will be staying with people. I want to give them a gift of appreciation! Is this something that is customary? If so, what should I give? They are friends that I met on vacation once, and we kept in touch. They stayed with me for a bit a few years ago and brought some wine from Greece. They didn't have to do that but was happy they made the gesture. Any ideas besides wine?

I would look for unique wine to the US that they may not have tried. Depending on how well you know them, you can also ask them!

Best Greek Independence Day Parades?

I know Greek Independence Day is coming up. I am curious, where in the word are there the best celebrations? I don't have time to travel far this year, but I could keep in mind for next year.

What do people typically do in Greece for it? Are there parades? Where is the biggest parade? I know in the US there are typically parades in Chicago, New York, and Boston.

Celebrating Greek Name Days

What do people here do to celebrate their name days? Most people barely even remember all the name days, and last year I almost forgot about it. But I know that some people love to honor their name day. I am curious what people do. I have a friend who tries to go to church if there is a service. Other friends go out for dinner, as if they are celebrating a birthday.

Would Love to Experience the Greek Kalanda Tradition!

I would love to experience the Greek Kalanda tradition for myself in Greece. Does anyone have any advice on how to make that happen this year? I plan to go to Greece in a few weeks to visit some people and hope to see this first-hand. It seems like a really great tradition.

Gift at a Greek Wedding in Canada?

The couple is originally from Greece - the family only just came ten years ago. They are young, but the family holds to Greek traditions. The wedding is in Canada because that is where they settled.

I have sorted out what to wear, no I need insight as to what to give the couple! They actually don't even have a registry.

Greek Ships Christmas Tradition?

I have heard of the tradition of decorating boats in Greece for Christmas. I think it's called karakavi? Does anyone know anything more about it? This isn't a tradition my family adopted but I have heard of friends doing it. I am thinking of adding it to our holiday celebrations this year.

From what I can tell, people who don't have an actual boat decorate models of boats. At first, I thought based on pics I had seen of Greece in the past, that boat owners were just being festive. lol
