I’m hoping to get some ideas from people who love Greek taverna food as much as I do. Every time I’m in Greece, I’m reminded how simple and satisfying taverna dishes can be, nothing fancy, just good ingredients cooked well. I’d love to start making more of those classic, everyday taverna-style dishes at home.

I’m especially interested in foods that translate well to a home kitchen and don’t require special equipment or hard-to-find ingredients. Think dishes you’d expect to see on a handwritten menu: things that are comforting, shareable, and full of flavor rather than overly complicated.

What are your go-to taverna dishes that you regularly cook at home? Are there any that surprised you by being easier than they look when ordered out? I’d also love tips on what makes home-cooked versions feel more “taverna-like”, whether it’s technique, ingredients, or even how you serve them.
 
Some of the easiest and most authentic taverna dishes to make at home are fasolakia, lemon potatoes, baked chicken with oregano, and simple grilled halloumi. What really helps is using good olive oil, fresh herbs, and serving everything family-style with bread and salad, which creates that relaxed, taverna feeling.

This is exactly the kind of Greek food I love to cook at home too. A lot of classic taverna dishes are surprisingly simple once you stop overthinking them. Lemon potatoes, gigantes baked in tomato sauce, lentil soup, zucchini or eggplant fried in olive oil, and chicken or pork roasted with oregano all translate really well to a home kitchen.

What makes them feel taverna-like for me is restraint: fewer ingredients, good olive oil, and letting things cook slowly without fussing. I’ve also found that serving matters — dishes in the middle of the table, warm bread, maybe a simple salad on the side. Even something like eggs with tomatoes or sautéed greens can feel special that way. It’s more about rhythm and simplicity than technique.

Simple Greek Lentil Soup Recipe

I make lentil soup a lot this time of year especially since this is a pretty big fasting period (lent). I thought I'd share my recipe!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup brown lentils
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, chopped (optional but common)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2–3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1–2 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1–2 tbsp red wine vinegar (for serving)
Instructions
  1. Rinse the lentils well under cold water.
  2. In a pot, add lentils and water. Bring to a boil and skim any foam.
  3. Add onion, garlic, carrot, bay leaf, olive oil, and tomato paste.
  4. Lower the heat and simmer for about 30–40 minutes, until the lentils are tender.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
