Hidden Gems in Santorini?

I’m heading back to Santorini this year, and even though I know it’ll be peak season, I’m still really excited. I’ve visited before and already done most of the classic tourist experiences, Oia sunsets, the volcano tour, Red Beach, winery visits, all of that. This time, I’d love to experience a different side of the island and find some quieter or lesser-known spots.

I know Santorini gets crowded in the summer, but I’m hoping there are still hidden gems if you know where to look. Maybe a peaceful village, a taverna locals love, a secluded swimming spot, or even just a scenic place that most visitors skip.

I tend to enjoy slower experiences more than packed itineraries, especially places where you can really feel the atmosphere of the island. For people who know Santorini well, what are your favorite hidden gems or underrated experiences? I’d love recommendations beyond the usual lists.

One of my favorite surprises in Santorini was Pyrgos. After the crowds in Oia and Fira, it felt much quieter and more authentic. I loved just walking through the small streets, finding little cafés, and watching the sunset without huge crowds everywhere.

Honestly, some of my best moments in Santorini came from slowing down instead of chasing every tourist spot. Quiet morning walks, long dinners at small tavernas, and random viewpoints away from the busy areas ended up being way more memorable for me.

If you are looking beyond the usual Santorini spots, I would suggest exploring Pyrgos and Megalochori for a quieter, less-crowded village feel. Early-morning walks there feel very different from those in Oia. Also, some of the small beaches on the south side offer a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the popular ones.

If you’ve already done the classic Santorini checklist, I’d lean into the quieter rhythm of the island this time. One of my favorite places is Pyrgos. It still feels like Santorini, but slower, and wandering the little alleys up toward the old castle area early in the morning or near sunset feels completely different from Oia.

I’d also spend time in Emporio. The village itself is interesting to walk through, and it feels more lived-in than curated for visitors. For swimming, I actually prefer Vlychada over some of the more famous beaches. The cliffs give it a different atmosphere and it tends to feel calmer.

One underrated experience: pick a random taverna inland and stay longer than planned. Santorini changes when you stop trying to “see” it and just let yourself be there.
