Historical Places in Athens Besides the Acropolis?

I’m planning a trip to Athens and, of course, I’ll be visiting the Acropolis. But I’d love some recommendations for other historical sites that are worth exploring.

I’ve heard that the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus are must-sees—are they worth the visit? What about lesser-known ruins or historical neighborhoods that give a glimpse into Athens’ past?

I’m also interested in Byzantine and Ottoman-era sites, not just ancient ruins. Are there any hidden gems like old churches, Ottoman mosques, or neoclassical buildings that tell a unique story?

If you’ve been to Athens and have a favorite historical spot that’s not packed with tourists, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

You're in for a treat—Athens is full of historical gems beyond the Acropolis! The Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus are absolutely worth a visit. The Agora gives a real sense of ancient Athenian life, and the Temple of Hephaestus is one of the best-preserved in Greece.

For lesser-known ruins, check out the Kerameikos—an ancient cemetery with fascinating sculptures and ruins, often overlooked by tourists. Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora are also worth exploring.

Since you're interested in Byzantine and Ottoman-era sites, don't miss the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, one of Athens' oldest Byzantine churches, and the stunning Daphni Monastery (a UNESCO site). The Fethiye Mosque and Tzistarakis Mosque in Monastiraki give a glimpse into the Ottoman past.
