Do many people still make homemade Greek soups during the summer?

I was thinking about this earlier because I usually associate soups more with colder weather, but growing up, soup still showed up at the table sometimes even in warmer months. Things like avgolemono, fasolada, or lighter vegetable soups never completely disappeared once summer arrived.

I’m curious what soups people actually make during Greek summers, especially in Greece itself. Do people switch to lighter recipes, or are traditional soups still common no matter the season? I could also see certain island or village recipes being more seasonal depending on what vegetables and herbs are available.

I’d love to hear what people grew up eating or what they still make now during the summer months. Any family favorites or regional soups worth trying would be interesting to hear about too.

I think soup is definitely still part of Greek cooking during the summer, but people often gravitate toward lighter versions. My family would still make avgolemono year-round because it feels comforting without being too heavy, especially when made with extra lemon. Vegetable-based soups also seemed more common in the warmer months when fresh zucchini, tomatoes, green beans, and herbs were readily available.

One summer soup I don't hear discussed very often is revithosoupa (chickpea soup). It can be surprisingly light, especially when flavored simply with olive oil, lemon, and herbs. I've also seen cooks make lighter versions of fasolada using fresh seasonal vegetables rather than the heartier winter-style approach.

In Greece, I think seasonality plays a big role. Village and island kitchens often cook based on what is growing at the time, so soups naturally change throughout the year. I'd love to hear if anyone has regional summer soup recipes that have been passed down through their family.

Healthy and Light Greek-Style Dinners

Now that summer is here and the temperatures have really started climbing, I've noticed myself craving lighter meals and rethinking some of my usual dinner choices. Foods that sounded comforting a few months ago suddenly feel a bit too heavy when it's 90 degrees outside.

I've always loved Greek food because so much of it naturally incorporates fresh vegetables, olive oil, herbs, seafood, and simple ingredients. Lately I've been making more Greek salads, grilled fish, and vegetable-based dishes, but I'm looking for additional ideas.

What are your favorite healthy and lighter Greek-style dinners during the hotter months? Are there traditional summer dishes that Greek families commonly make when the weather gets really warm? I'd especially love suggestions that don't require a lot of oven time, since I'm trying to keep the kitchen cool as well.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone enjoys during the summer!

What to order in tavernas in Greece?

I'm hoping to spend some time in Greece this fall, and one thing I'm really looking forward to is eating at traditional tavernas. The problem is that every menu seems to have so many delicious choices that I know I'll have trouble deciding!

Of course, I'll probably order classics like souvlaki, moussaka, and Greek salad at some point, but I'd really like to branch out and try dishes that locals order or specialties that visitors sometimes overlook.

If you could recommend just a few must-order items, what would they be? Are there any regional dishes, seasonal favorites, or lesser-known recipes that are especially good in the fall?

I'd also love to know if there are dishes you almost always order when you visit a taverna. Looking forward to hearing everyone's recommendations and maybe discovering a few new favorites before my trip!

Favorite Greek Dishes with Fresh Tomatoes?

Now that tomatoes are at their peak, I've been trying to think of more traditional Greek dishes that really let fresh, ripe tomatoes shine. Of course, horiatiki salad immediately comes to mind, but I know there have to be plenty of other favorites that make the most of summer tomatoes.

I'd love to get some ideas for dishes to make while good tomatoes are in season. They can be simple family recipes, classic village dishes, or something that's more specific to a particular region of Greece. I'm open to just about anything, whether it's a main course, side dish, or even an appetizer.

What are your favorite Greek dishes that feature fresh tomatoes? Are there any recipes you make every summer because the tomatoes are simply too good to pass up? I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Lamb Souvlaki Marinade Ideas

I've always marinated lamb souvlaki in a simple ladolemono (olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper), and it's consistently delicious. Lately, though, I've been hearing about all kinds of other methods, and it's made me curious.

One person I know swears by nothing more than olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Others add dried oregano to that mix, while I've even seen people say they use bottled Greek dressing as a quick marinade. It seems like everyone has their own approach!

I'm wondering what is considered the more traditional method in Greece. Is there a classic marinade that most families use, or does it vary by region and household? Do you prefer fresh garlic or garlic powder? Lemon before grilling, after grilling, or both?

I'd love to hear your favorite lamb souvlaki marinades, family recipes, and any tips you've picked up over the years.

Favorite Greek Foods from Childhood?

Do you have any Greek comfort foods that immediately bring you back to childhood? I have a few dishes that always have that effect on me. Avgolemono soup is definitely one of them, especially on a cold day or when I’m not feeling well. Dolmades are another, since they were always part of family meals and gatherings growing up. I also love yemista, which is still one of those meals that feels comforting and familiar every time I have it.

I’m curious what dishes have the same meaning for everyone else. Maybe it’s something your grandmother made, a simple meal you ate after school, or a dish that always appeared at Sunday dinners and holidays.

What Greek foods take you right back to childhood? I’d especially love to hear about some of the less obvious comfort foods and regional dishes that other families grew up eating.
