I looked up Ohi Day resentful because I learned it was occurring soon. I find the history so interesting! I know that Greeks have the day off. I am wondering how Greeks typically celebrate it? The events surrounding the day seemed to represent Greece's ability to stand up for what was right and to resist the Axis forces. It was the right thing to do to not let the Axis enter Greece easily so that they can have a strategic place for their troops.

To celebrate this important part of history today, though, what do the Greeks do today?

There are some celebrations throughout the country. I believe it is a holiday where people have the day off and there might be parades and other celebrations. This is an important day for Greeks.

Fasting or Giving Something Up for Lent

Orthodox Christian Lent started today... I am curious - what do people here do for it? Many people I know "give something up" other people "Fast" according to the prescribed church fast.

I am not sure what I want to do this year. It is hard following the fast, but also not too bad because I don't eat a lot of meat.. I might want to do something that feels a bit more personal...

Gifts for visiting people in Greece ideas

I am visiting Greece this summer and will be staying with people. I want to give them a gift of appreciation! Is this something that is customary? If so, what should I give? They are friends that I met on vacation once, and we kept in touch. They stayed with me for a bit a few years ago and brought some wine from Greece. They didn't have to do that but was happy they made the gesture. Any ideas besides wine?

Gift at a Greek Wedding in Canada?

The couple is originally from Greece - the family only just came ten years ago. They are young, but the family holds to Greek traditions. The wedding is in Canada because that is where they settled.

I have sorted out what to wear, no I need insight as to what to give the couple! They actually don't even have a registry.

Going to a Greek Christening Soon

I am agonizing over what to give the child. I have been to plenty of christenings and I typically give money.

This is a different situation because I am a bit closer to the family than normal. I want to be more generous than I usually am. I will still give money, but I want to give a gift to open. Do you have any advice? It's a boy...

Celebrating Greek Name Days

What do people here do to celebrate their name days? Most people barely even remember all the name days, and last year I almost forgot about it. But I know that some people love to honor their name day. I am curious what people do. I have a friend who tries to go to church if there is a service. Other friends go out for dinner, as if they are celebrating a birthday.
