This is for all of the users that have a green thumb.... I've always wanted to grow olives in my backyard, but part of me thinks that they will never taste as good as the ones that I get from Greece. Is it even worth trying? For a little bit of context, I live in Montreal where the summers are warm but the winters are pretty cold and snowy. Has anyone tried this out themselves?

I didn't think olives grew well in climates like that? They wouldn't survive the winter - but maybe if you had the tree indoors or in a greenhouse?

I live in New Jersey and we leave our olive tree out starting in May until October. Then bring in to basement with grow lights. Get lots of olives. Good luck.

Wow this is an amazing idea. Does it take a lot of work to keep the plants from dying when you bring them inside? I would love to get started on this project

Not at all. We have it in a large pot and wheel it in. We have grow lights on a timer and maybe water it every 3-4 weeks during the winter.

You’ll probably get decent fruit for a while, but long term mulberries want space. I keep mine smaller by pruning after fruiting, works better than trying to cage the roots. Funny thing, I got into indoor plants at the same time, and they’ve taught me a lot about controlling size with pots and pruning.

What’s the correct way to eat fava?

I’ve had fava quite a few times over the years and realized I may not actually know the “correct” way to eat it…

Sometimes it’s served really simply with olive oil, onion, capers, and lemon. Other times people seem to treat it more like a dip and eat it with bread, while I’ve also seen it served alongside seafood or other small dishes.

So now I’m curious, is there a traditional way people in Greece would eat fava, or does it depend on the region and family?

Do you mix everything together? Eat the toppings separately? Warm or room temperature? Bread or no bread?

Most common Greek soups people make at home?

I’ve been thinking lately about how many soups are part of everyday Greek home cooking, especially compared to restaurant menus. Most people know avgolemono, but I’m curious what soups Greeks actually make regularly at home.

Growing up, I remember hearing about fasolada and lentil soup a lot, and I’ve also seen trahana mentioned in conversations online. It made me wonder what the “standard” soups are in different parts of Greece or in Greek families abroad.

What are the most common Greek soups people still cook today? Are they mostly winter foods, or are there lighter soups people make year-round? Also, are there any soups that are considered especially traditional for holidays, fasting periods, or village cooking?

Would love to hear what soups were common in your family growing up, or what you still make now.

I was thinking about this because every summer I seem to crave the same Greek foods, and I’m not sure if it’s because they’re actually traditional summer foods or just because I associate them with festivals, cookouts, and family gatherings.

For me, it’s always things like horiatiki, watermelon with feta, souvlaki, tzatziki, grilled seafood, and anything with tomatoes, olive oil, lemon, and oregano. Even a cold frappé feels like summer to me.

But then I started wondering if this depends on where your family is from in Greece, or whether people mostly think of the same foods when summer comes around.

I've always loved a traditional Greek village salad (horiatiki), and the older I get, the more I appreciate how simple it is. For me, the perfect Greek salad starts with ripe tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, olives, a generous piece of feta on top, good olive oil, and a sprinkle of oregano. No lettuce—just the classic ingredients.

That got me wondering how everyone else likes their Greek salad. Do you prefer the traditional village-style version, or do you add other ingredients? I've seen some people include green peppers, capers, or even different types of cheese depending on the region.

I was thinking about this earlier because I usually associate soups more with colder weather, but growing up, soup still showed up at the table sometimes even in warmer months. Things like avgolemono, fasolada, or lighter vegetable soups never completely disappeared once summer arrived.

I’m curious what soups people actually make during Greek summers, especially in Greece itself. Do people switch to lighter recipes, or are traditional soups still common no matter the season? I could also see certain island or village recipes being more seasonal depending on what vegetables and herbs are available.
