I’ve only ever been to Santorini in May, and I absolutely loved it, the weather was perfect, and it felt busy but still manageable. Now I’m considering a trip to Greece this summer, and someone in my group is really pushing for Santorini again.

I’m a little hesitant, though. I’ve heard that in peak summer months the crowds can get pretty intense, especially in places like Oia and Fira. Part of what I loved last time was being able to actually enjoy the views without feeling packed in.

For those who have been in July or August, is it still worth it? Or does the crowd level take away from the experience? Are there ways to do Santorini in summer that still feel enjoyable, or would you recommend choosing a different island instead?

Santorini in peak summer can feel very crowded, especially in Oia and Fira during midday and sunset hours. You can still enjoy it by exploring early mornings, staying in quieter villages like Pyrgos, and planning activities strategically. Visiting beaches or wineries during peak times also helps balance the experience and avoid the heaviest crowds.

I've been going to Santorini for 40+ years and it will get crowded in Fira when the cruise ships disembark and in Oia before & after sunset. But I agree, you can get away from them by going to Perissa, Perivolos, or Monolithos beach by bus and wander up to Firostephani or Imerovigli. Buses and walkways may be crowded. There still are traditional tavernas near the catamaran port of Vlychada.

Summer in Santorini can feel packed, but staying in quieter villages like Pyrgos or Megalochori makes it way easier to enjoy. I’ve done trips in peak season and kept my sanity by flying in comfortably using travelbusinessclass.com, which helped me save on business class seats and arrive less drained. If the crowds worry you, choosing calmer areas and timing outings early or late helps a lot.

Summer in Santorini is hotter and way more crowded, so the vibe feels very different from May. I’ve gone in peak season, and the trick was booking things early and staying outside the busiest spots. I used Travel Business Class for my flights, which helped cut the stress and cost, so the trip felt smoother even with the chaos on the island.

I’ve been to Santorini in both shoulder season and peak summer, and honestly, it’s a different vibe.

July/August is beautiful but busy, especially Oia and Fira around sunset. You still get the views, just not the quiet, relaxed feel you had in May. That said, it’s not a bad trip if you adjust a bit. Early mornings are still magical, and staying in quieter spots like Pyrgos or Imerovigli helps a lot.

So I’d say it’s worth it if you’re okay planning around the crowds rather than avoiding them completely.

What a great question! I believe that, although Santorini can be expensive and crowded, it really is worth doing at least once, no matter the time of year. However, I have been to the island both during the peak season and also during the shoulder season. There's a way that you can be strategic and have a fabulous time, enjoying the sunset, even if it's very busy. For example, if you ask locals where to go for sunset, they may direct you to some great spots (they exist), rather than join the crowds at Oia. For example, there are some restaurants and beaches where you can sit and have a great view. If you get there early enough, you can get a great sunset spot that aren't as crowded.

Hidden Gems in Santorini?

I’m heading back to Santorini this year, and even though I know it’ll be peak season, I’m still really excited. I’ve visited before and already done most of the classic tourist experiences, Oia sunsets, the volcano tour, Red Beach, winery visits, all of that. This time, I’d love to experience a different side of the island and find some quieter or lesser-known spots.

I know Santorini gets crowded in the summer, but I’m hoping there are still hidden gems if you know where to look. Maybe a peaceful village, a taverna locals love, a secluded swimming spot, or even just a scenic place that most visitors skip.

I tend to enjoy slower experiences more than packed itineraries, especially places where you can really feel the atmosphere of the island. For people who know Santorini well, what are your favorite hidden gems or underrated experiences? I’d love recommendations beyond the usual lists.

How was the airport experience in Santorini?

I’ve been to Santorini a few times, but I’ve always arrived and departed by ferry, never by plane. For my next trip, I’m thinking about flying in or out, depending on how the itinerary shapes up, and I’d love to hear from those of you who’ve actually used the Santorini airport.

How was your experience? Is it as chaotic as some reviews make it sound, or does it just depend on the time of year? I’m curious about everything, check-in lines, baggage claim, the size of the terminal, transportation to and from hotels, even how early you’d recommend arriving before a flight.

I’d also love to know if there’s a big difference between domestic and international departures. Is it worth paying extra for a direct flight, or are the Athens connections smooth enough? Any first-hand details would really help me plan ahead for next year’s trip.

Avoiding Santorini Crowds?

I’m starting to think about a trip to Santorini this year. It’s been a while since I’ve been, and I’d really like to go back, but I keep hearing how crowded it’s gotten.

I’m not expecting it to be empty or anything, but I’d love to time it so I can still enjoy the views, walk around without feeling packed in, and actually get into restaurants without a huge wait.

For those of you who have been recently, when do you think is the best time to go? I’m trying to balance decent weather (warm enough for walking, maybe even the beach) with fewer crowds. Is late spring a good window? Or is early fall better?

Best Beaches in Santorini for Kids?

We’re planning a big family trip for early autumn and Santorini is one of the top contenders. We’ll have a mix of adults and kids in our group, mostly ages 4 to 10, and I’m trying to get a sense of how family-friendly the beaches are.

Are there any beaches on Santorini that are safe, sandy, and good for swimming with younger children? Shade would be a huge plus, or at least nearby tavernas where we can take breaks. We’re also wondering about beach access, are there spots that are easier to reach with kids and beach gear (less rocky or steep)?

We’re not expecting huge playgrounds or anything, just something relaxing and low-key where kids can enjoy the water and we don’t have to stress too much.

Is May a Good Month for Santorini?

I’m considering a trip to Santorini and would love some firsthand insight on visiting in May.

I’m hoping for a balance between pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a more authentic feel of the island before peak summer tourism takes over. I’ve read that May can be warm but not too hot, with flowers still in bloom and restaurants starting to fully open for the season, but I’m curious how this plays out in reality. Does the island still feel calm, or is it already busy with cruise traffic? That's my main concern.

If you’ve visited Santorini in May, I’d love to hear what stood out, both the pros and any drawbacks you noticed.
