Kefalonia for Outdoor Sports?

I'm considering a trip to Kefalonia and I’m curious if it's a good destination for outdoor sports and activities. I’m an active traveler who loves things like hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and exploring nature, so I’m looking for a place that offers plenty of opportunities to stay active while enjoying beautiful scenery.

Does Kefalonia have good hiking trails or places to go mountain biking? How about water sports like snorkeling, diving, or sea kayaking? I’ve heard the island has some incredible beaches and natural landscapes, but I’m wondering if there are organized activities or tours that cater to outdoor enthusiasts.

Also, if anyone has tips on the best spots or specific companies that offer these kinds of activities, I’d really appreciate your recommendations! Looking forward to hearing your experiences and advice.

Finding Where to Stay in Kefalonia

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia, at least that’s where I’m leaning for now. It all depends on how the research phase goes, so I’d love some advice on where to stay. I’m looking for a relaxing area that has some life to it—local tavernas, maybe a little town square, but isn’t overly touristy or packed with crowds. Ideally, I’d love to stay near the beach, or even right on it if that’s possible without breaking the bank.

I’ve seen mentions of places like Assos, Fiskardo (which I've talked about another thread), Sami, and Argostoli, but I’m not sure which one fits the vibe I’m looking for. I don’t mind renting a car, but I’d prefer not to be too isolated either. A cozy rental or small hotel with sea views sounds perfect. If anyone has favorite spots, quiet beach areas, or tips on where to base myself, I’d be so grateful!

What does Kefalonia look like in spring?

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia, and I keep wondering what the island is like in spring. I’ve only seen photos from summer, when the beaches are packed and the hills look golden and dry, but I’ve heard that spring is a completely different experience.

If you’ve been there in April or May, I’d love to hear what it’s like! Is the landscape really as green and full of wildflowers as some people say? Are the hills and olive groves especially lush that time of year? I’m also curious if the weather is warm enough to enjoy the beaches or if it’s more of a hiking and exploring season.

Best Coastal Drives in Kefalonia?

I’ve been looking at photos and maps of Kefalonia lately, and what really stands out is how dramatic the coastline seems from above. The cliffs, the sharp turns, the sudden views of turquoise water — it feels like the kind of island where the drive itself is part of the experience.

That made me curious about the best coastal routes on the island. Not just the famous viewpoints, but the actual stretches of road that are especially beautiful to follow. Are there particular drives where the scenery keeps unfolding the entire way? Sections that feel wild and untouched versus more polished and built up?

I’ve heard different opinions about the road between Argostoli and Fiskardo, and also about the western side near Petani and Myrtos. For those who know the island well, which coastal drives truly stand out, and at what time of day do they feel most special?

Lixouri for a vacation apartment?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia next summer with a big group — family and close friends, around 8–10 people total — and we’re thinking of renting a large vacation apartment or villa. Lixouri keeps popping up as an option, but I don’t know much about it beyond being across the bay from Argostoli.

Is Lixouri a good base for a group stay? We’d love to be somewhere with an authentic Greek feel, good local tavernas, walkable areas, and easy access to beaches. We’ll have a few cars, so driving to other parts of the island isn’t a problem, but we don’t want to feel too isolated either.

For anyone who’s stayed there — what’s your impression of Lixouri? Peaceful and charming or a bit too quiet? Would you recommend it for a larger group vacation?
