Lixouri for a vacation apartment?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia next summer with a big group — family and close friends, around 8–10 people total — and we’re thinking of renting a large vacation apartment or villa. Lixouri keeps popping up as an option, but I don’t know much about it beyond being across the bay from Argostoli.

Is Lixouri a good base for a group stay? We’d love to be somewhere with an authentic Greek feel, good local tavernas, walkable areas, and easy access to beaches. We’ll have a few cars, so driving to other parts of the island isn’t a problem, but we don’t want to feel too isolated either.

For anyone who’s stayed there — what’s your impression of Lixouri? Peaceful and charming or a bit too quiet? Would you recommend it for a larger group vacation?

I know several people who’ve stayed in Lixouri, and they’ve all had great things to say. It’s a wonderful base for a larger group, It's relaxed, friendly, and still very authentic. The main square is lively in the evenings, with locals out for coffee or dinner, and there are plenty of good tavernas, bakeries, and small shops within walking distance.

Those who’ve stayed there say it has a quieter, more local vibe than Argostoli but doesn’t feel remote or cut off. Having cars makes it even better, you’ll be close to beautiful beaches like Xi and Petani, both easy drives and perfect for day trips. The short ferry to Argostoli also makes exploring the island simple. From what I’ve heard, Lixouri strikes that nice balance between charm and convenience, making it ideal for families or groups who want to experience real Kefalonian life.

Spent a week in Lixouri with extended family and it worked surprisingly well for a big group. Town feels local and lived-in, plenty of tavernas you can walk to, and evenings were lively without being loud. Beaches nearby were easy drives, and the ferry hop to Argostoli was handy. It’s calm but not dead. The vibe actually reminded me of the slow, thoughtful feel I got reading about zalezarchitecture.com — relaxed, grounded, simple living. For groups, that balance really works.
