I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia and would love to do some island hopping while I’m there. I know the Ionian Islands have some amazing spots, but I’m not sure which ones are the easiest to visit from Kefalonia.

I’ve heard that Ithaca is nearby—how easy is it to get there, and is it worth a day trip? Are there any smaller, less touristy islands that you’d recommend? I’m also curious if Zakynthos (Zante) is a realistic option for a quick visit or if it’s better to focus on smaller islands.

What’s the best way to get around? Are ferries reliable, or would it be better to rent a boat for a more flexible experience?

Any advice on routes, must-see spots, or hidden gems would be really appreciated! Looking forward to your suggestions.

Depending on how long you stay in Kefalonia you should rent a car to get around and explore the island.
You can do day trips from Poros to Zakynthos and Ithaki. These are guided tours on a small cruiser run by locals with English speaking guides . You can find information on the net.
You can also go on your own on a ferry from Sami to Itaki (Pisaetos), you can take your car on the ferry provided the rental company allows . This ferry goes to Astakos too.
Another ferry goes from Passada to Zakynthos ( Agios Nickolaos ), this takes cars as well.
Another ferry goes from Fiskardo to Lefkada ( Vassiliki), car ferry.
All the ferries do several return trips on any given day in season.

This is super helpful sometimes it's hard to figure out the routes that are possible! Thank you.

Island hopping from Kefalonia is a fantastic idea! Ithaca is the easiest and most rewarding day trip—it’s just a short ferry ride from Sami or Fiskardo, and its charming villages, hidden beaches, and Odyssean history make it well worth a visit.

If you’re looking for a less touristy spot, consider Kastos or Kalamos, two tiny, serene islands accessible by private boat from Lefkada or through local excursions. Meganisi is another peaceful option with crystal-clear waters and secluded coves.

Zakynthos is possible but trickier for a day trip—it requires a ferry from Poros and then a drive to the famous Navagio Beach or Blue Caves, so it’s better if you have at least a night to spare.

Ferries between the Ionian islands are generally reliable in summer, but if you want more flexibility and access to hidden spots, renting a boat (especially from Fiskardo) is a great option.

Best Time of Year to Visit Kefalonia?

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia next year, but I’m not sure when the best time to visit is. I’ve heard great things about the island’s beaches, hiking trails, and charming villages, but I’m trying to decide if it’s better to go in spring, summer, or early fall.

From what I’ve read, spring sounds lush and less crowded, and early summer seems perfect for swimming and open tavernas—but maybe still too touristy? Then there’s September, which might offer warm water, harvest season vibes, and fewer crowds. I’m also wondering about weather, costs, and what’s open or closed in the off-season. Are ferries and flights still easy to get?

If you’ve been in May vs. July vs. September, I’d love to hear how they compared—especially for swimming, sightseeing, and avoiding tourist traps. Budget tips welcome too!

Tips for Driving on Kefalonia?

I’ve been to Kefalonia several times and absolutely love the island, but oddly enough, I’ve never actually driven there myself. This summer I’m considering renting a car so I can explore a bit more freely, especially some of the smaller villages and the harder-to-reach beaches, but I keep hearing mixed things about the roads.

For those of you who’ve driven in Kefalonia, how challenging is it really? I know there are some steep mountain routes and narrow coastal roads, but are they manageable for someone who’s a decent driver but not used to tight switchbacks? Any tips for navigating the island safely, times of day to avoid, particular routes that are easier for beginners, parking advice, or things you wish you’d known beforehand?

I’d love to finally try driving there, but I want to make sure I’m prepared before booking the car.

Best Tavernas with Sea Views on Kefalonia

One of the things I always look forward to when traveling in Greece is finding a taverna with a beautiful sea view. There’s just something about sitting outside, looking out over the water, and enjoying a long meal that makes the whole experience feel even more memorable.

I’m hoping to spend some time on Kefalonia and would love to hear your recommendations for tavernas where the view is part of the experience. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy—sometimes the simple places end up being the best—but a great setting overlooking the sea is always a bonus.

Whether it’s a spot above a beach, a harborfront table, or a hillside taverna looking out over the Ionian, I’d love to hear about it.

Which tavernas on Kefalonia have the best sea views while you’re enjoying your meal? Any favorites that really stand out?

What does Kefalonia look like in spring?

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia, and I keep wondering what the island is like in spring. I’ve only seen photos from summer, when the beaches are packed and the hills look golden and dry, but I’ve heard that spring is a completely different experience.

If you’ve been there in April or May, I’d love to hear what it’s like! Is the landscape really as green and full of wildflowers as some people say? Are the hills and olive groves especially lush that time of year? I’m also curious if the weather is warm enough to enjoy the beaches or if it’s more of a hiking and exploring season.

Are most tavernas and shops open, or does it still feel sleepy before summer kicks in? I haven’t booked anything yet, so I’d love to know if spring is a magical time to go or if summer is better.

Best Coastal Drives in Kefalonia?

I’ve been looking at photos and maps of Kefalonia lately, and what really stands out is how dramatic the coastline seems from above. The cliffs, the sharp turns, the sudden views of turquoise water — it feels like the kind of island where the drive itself is part of the experience.

That made me curious about the best coastal routes on the island. Not just the famous viewpoints, but the actual stretches of road that are especially beautiful to follow. Are there particular drives where the scenery keeps unfolding the entire way? Sections that feel wild and untouched versus more polished and built up?

I’ve heard different opinions about the road between Argostoli and Fiskardo, and also about the western side near Petani and Myrtos. For those who know the island well, which coastal drives truly stand out, and at what time of day do they feel most special?
