Places to go for the first time in Greece?

A friend of mine is planning her first trip to Greece, and she asked me what she should prioritize for about 10 days. I’ve been lucky enough to go quite a few times, so I gave her a starting point: Athens for the history, Santorini for the views, and Mykonos for the energy and beaches.

She loved that outline, but she wants to add one more destination to round out the trip. That’s where I started second guessing myself a bit, because there are so many good options depending on what kind of experience she wants.

I was thinking maybe somewhere a little different to balance things out, but I’m curious what others would suggest. If you had 10 days and those three spots already planned, what would be your fourth destination for a first-time visitor?

I would suggest adding Crete to the itinerary. It offers a different pace from Santorini and Mykonos, with a mix of beautiful beaches, local villages, and historical sites such as Knossos. It also gives a more authentic feel of everyday Greek life. For a first visit, that balance can make the overall trip more memorable.

Yes, Crete! It's my favorite place in Greece, and that's saying a lot since I've loved everywhere in Greece I have ever been.

Honestly, your plan already sounds so good but if she wants to add one more place, I’d say go for Paros.

It has that same Greek island charm—beaches, cute villages, great food—but it’s way more relaxed than Mykonos. It kind of gives you space to actually slow down and enjoy everything instead of rushing around. I remember reading about it somewhere and thinking it would fit perfectly with a trip like this.
