I'm planning a trip to Thessaloniki and would appreciate some advice on the public transportation system. How reliable and convenient are the buses? Are there any other public transport options I should consider? Also, is it easy to get around the city without a car? Any tips on purchasing tickets or navigating the routes would be really helpful. We're hoping to explore the city extensively, so any insights on the best ways to get around would be greatly appreciated.

Thessaloniki’s public transportation system is primarily bus-based, operated by OASTH. The buses are generally reliable and cover most parts of the city, though they can be crowded during peak hours. Currently, the metro is under construction, so buses are the main public transport option.

You can easily get around Thessaloniki without a car, as many attractions are within walking distance. The city is pedestrian-friendly, and taxis are also affordable for short trips.

For tickets, you can purchase them at kiosks, bus stop machines, or via the OASTH app, which also provides real-time schedules and route information. Make sure to validate your ticket once you board the bus. Familiarize yourself with key bus routes to navigate efficiently.

Combining walking with bus rides is the best way to explore Thessaloniki, allowing you to enjoy both its vibrant street life and historical sites.

How Soon to Start Planning a Trip to Thessaloniki for Next Summer?

I know I am going to Thessaloniki in the summer, but I am not quite ready to do so because I haven't quite nailed the timing. Lots of factors, including work, are preventing me from planning.

I will be flying out of Toronto when eventually decided my travel itinerary.

How soon do I need to get my act together to plan the trip - I am likely going in July. I don't want to miss out on good flight prices. I know that once I have the flight, the rest of the trip will be easier to plan. It's the flight I am mostly concerned about.

Advice for taking a food tour of Thessaloniki?

I absolutely love Thessaloniki, but I’ve never really explored it through a food tour before. This time, I want to dive deep into the local flavors and experience the city in a new way. I’m looking for something very authentic—less about touristy spots and more about where the locals eat.

Has anyone taken a great food tour in Thessaloniki that really showcases the city’s culinary identity? I’d love recommendations for tours that focus on traditional meze, street food, or even lesser-known family-run spots. Bonus points if there’s a chance to learn about the city’s diverse food history along the way!

If you’ve done one, what were the highlights? Or would you recommend skipping a tour and just doing a self-guided food adventure instead?

New park in Thessaloniki?

I recently heard about a new park being developed in Thessaloniki, possibly called the Pavlos Melas Metropolitan Park.I'm curious if anyone has more information about it.

Is the park open to the public yet, or is it still under construction? If it's open, what are the main features or attractions?I'm particularly interested in any cultural or historical aspects, as well as recreational facilities.

If it's not open yet, does anyone know the expected completion date? Any insights into the project's progress or what to expect would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your responses!

Favorite things to do in Thessaloniki?

I’m planning a trip to Thessaloniki soon and would love to hear your recommendations for things to do in this amazing city. I know it’s known for its history, food, and vibrant atmosphere, but there’s so much to choose from that I don’t know where to start!

What are your must-visit spots? Any favorite historical landmarks, museums, or neighborhoods to explore? I’ve heard the Ladadika district is great for food and nightlife—any specific restaurants or bars you love? Also, are there any off-the-beaten-path places that I shouldn’t miss? I love the vibe of Thessaloniki and plan to go soon...

Is Thessaloniki good for solo travelers?

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about planning a solo trip to Thessaloniki and was wondering—is it a good destination for solo travelers?

I’ve heard it has great food, lots of history, and a vibrant energy, which all sound amazing. But I’d love to hear from people who’ve been there on their own. I went once, a long time ago, but it was in a group (my family).

I’m hoping for a mix of chill exploring and cultural experiences, maybe even some beach time if possible.

Would love any tips, stories, or advice from anyone who’s done Thessaloniki solo. Thanks so much!
