Sailing trip around Kefalonia?

I will be in Kefalonia soon and I was thinking of planning a sailing trip for part of it. I'm particularly interested in the best routes to take, must-visit spots, and any hidden gems that I might miss otherwise. Are there any special anchorages or quiet bays perfect for a peaceful night? Additionally, any tips on local regulations, safety precautions, or recommended marinas would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time sailing in this area, so any insights or personal experiences would be really helpful.
 
Sailing around Kefalonia is an incredible experience! I recommend starting with a route that includes Assos and Fiscardo—both offer charming villages with picturesque harbors. For peaceful anchorages, Antisamos Bay is a must-visit, known for its crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings. Vathy on Ithaca is another gem, offering tranquility and a glimpse into local life.

For a hidden spot, check out Koutsoupia Beach, accessible only by boat and perfect for a quiet stop. As for regulations, ensure you’re aware of local mooring rules, especially in protected areas. The Sami Marina is well-equipped and a good base for your trip. Always check the weather forecast, as conditions can change rapidly. Enjoy your sailing adventure!

Which side of Kefalonia is best to stay on?

I might be going to Kefalonia next year, and I’m starting to look into the different areas of the island. I know places like Argostoli, Lixouri, Sami, Assos, and Fiskardo all have very different feels, so I’m wondering which part makes the best base.

I’d like somewhere that is scenic and relaxing, but still convenient for exploring beaches, villages, and restaurants. I don’t necessarily need nightlife, but I also don’t want to feel too isolated.

For anyone who has stayed in Kefalonia, which side of the island did you prefer? Did you find the east, west, north, or area around Argostoli easiest for getting around?

I’d especially love to hear from people who have stayed in more than one part of the island and can compare the experience.

Is a week enough in Kefalonia?

I'm thinking about planning a trip to Kefalonia and was wondering if a week is enough time to get a good feel for the island. I don't necessarily need to see absolutely everything, but I'd like enough time to explore without feeling like I'm constantly rushing from place to place.

I'd definitely want to visit some of the well-known spots like Myrtos Beach, Assos, Fiskardo, Melissani Cave, and Argostoli. I'd also like time for a few slower beach days, meals at local tavernas, and maybe some wandering through smaller villages.

For those who have been, does seven days feel like a comfortable amount of time? Would renting a car make it realistic to see a good variety of the island during that time?

I'm also curious if you'd recommend staying in one place for the whole week or splitting the trip between two different areas.

Historical sites to visit in Kefalonia?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia soon, and this time I want to focus more on history rather than beaches or food (though I’ll probably end up enjoying those too!). I’ve been to Greece many times, but never to Kefalonia, and I keep hearing that the island has a fascinating mix of Venetian, Byzantine, and even WWII history.

I already know about the St. Gerasimos Monastery and the earthquake that reshaped much of the island in 1953, but I’d love to discover more places that tell Kefalonia’s story. Are there any ancient ruins, castles, or historical museums worth seeing?

I’ve heard bits about the Assos Castle and the Venetian fortress of Agios Georgios near Argostoli, are they still accessible and worth the hike?

Any recommendations for must-see historical or cultural sites would be really appreciated!

Tips for Visiting Drogarati Cave

I’d love to hear your tips for visiting Drogarati Cave. I’ve loved Greece my whole life, I’m Greek, and somehow I’ve never made it to these caves, which feels almost unbelievable to admit. I’m finally starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia, and Drogarati is high on my list.

I’m curious about the practical side as much as the experience itself. Is it best to go early in the day or later? How strenuous is the walk and the stairs, and is it manageable if you want to take your time? I’ve also heard the acoustics are incredible, especially when concerts are held there. Does that change how you experience the space?

Any advice on what to expect, what surprised you, or how to make the visit feel meaningful rather than rushed would be appreciated. I’d love to experience it with the right mindset.

Lixouri for a vacation apartment?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia next summer with a big group — family and close friends, around 8–10 people total — and we’re thinking of renting a large vacation apartment or villa. Lixouri keeps popping up as an option, but I don’t know much about it beyond being across the bay from Argostoli.

Is Lixouri a good base for a group stay? We’d love to be somewhere with an authentic Greek feel, good local tavernas, walkable areas, and easy access to beaches. We’ll have a few cars, so driving to other parts of the island isn’t a problem, but we don’t want to feel too isolated either.

For anyone who’s stayed there — what’s your impression of Lixouri? Peaceful and charming or a bit too quiet? Would you recommend it for a larger group vacation?
