I’ve visited Santorini before, but always during the warmer months when the island is buzzing with energy. Lately I’ve been thinking about going off-peak, specifically around Christmas, and I’m curious if anyone here has done it.

Is Santorini in winter worth it? I know many hotels, restaurants, and shops close for the season, but I’ve heard mixed things — some say it’s peaceful and magical, others say it’s too quiet and the weather can be unpredictable. I’m not expecting beach days, but I do wonder what it actually feels like to walk around Oia and Fira in December. Are there still good food options? Do any wineries stay open? Is the sea too rough for boat trips?
 
I’ve been to Santorini in winter, including right around Christmas, and it’s a completely different experience from the summer rush, quieter, moodier, and in many ways more authentic. Oia and Fira feel almost cinematic when the crowds disappear; you can actually hear the wind, the bells, and the sea.

Yes, many hotels and tourist-driven restaurants close, but you’ll still find plenty of local tavernas open, especially in Fira, where year-round residents live. The food scene shifts from tourist plates to hearty winter dishes, which is a treat in itself.

Weather can swing from crisp and sunny to misty and dramatic, so layers are a must. Some wineries do stay open for tastings, Santo Wines and Venetsanos usually keep winter hours. As for boat trips, they’re limited and entirely dependent on the sea, but caldera walks are gorgeous in winter light. If you enjoy quiet beauty, it’s absolutely worth it.
 

Best herbs for baked lavraki - sea bass?

My local fishmonger often has fresh sea bass, and when I see it, I can’t resist picking some up. I’m pretty sure I’ve had it in Greece as lavraki—maybe grilled at a seaside taverna or baked with lemon and olive oil. I’d love to bring that flavor home!

I usually bake it whole, but I’m not sure I’m doing it the traditional Greek way. What herbs or aromatics are typically used for lavraki in Greece? I’ve heard oregano is common, but are there others—like thyme, rosemary, dill, or bay leaf?

Also, how is it most often prepared in Greek homes or tavernas? I kind of want to replicate those flavors.

Which Santorini villages still feel quiet and traditional now?

I’m thinking of visiting Santorini next year, but I keep hearing that the island has changed a lot — especially with how crowded Oia and Fira have become. I love the idea of seeing the caldera views, but I’m also hoping to experience the quieter, more traditional side of the island.

Are there still villages that feel peaceful and authentic, where you can wander through narrow streets, talk to locals, and maybe enjoy a meal at a family-run taverna without the crowds?

I’ve heard names like Megalochori, Pyrgos, and Emporio mentioned, but it’s hard to tell from online photos which places still hold onto that “old Santorini” charm. What do you think?

Avoiding Santorini Crowds?

I’m starting to think about a trip to Santorini this year. It’s been a while since I’ve been, and I’d really like to go back, but I keep hearing how crowded it’s gotten.

I’m not expecting it to be empty or anything, but I’d love to time it so I can still enjoy the views, walk around without feeling packed in, and actually get into restaurants without a huge wait.

For those of you who have been recently, when do you think is the best time to go? I’m trying to balance decent weather (warm enough for walking, maybe even the beach) with fewer crowds. Is late spring a good window? Or is early fall better?

Favorite shops to buy jewelry in Santorini?

I’m thinking about going back to Santorini next year — I’ve been a few times before and absolutely love the island. This time, though, I want to do something a little different and focus more on shopping, especially for jewelry. I’m looking for cute, unique pieces — either handmade, local designs or anything with a Greek flair that doesn’t feel too mass-produced.

Any favorite shops or designers you’ve come across in Fira, Oia, or even the smaller villages? I’d love to hear where you found your favorite pieces? I want unique things. Like, a friend brought me back a bracelet that was made from beads cut from the Santorini lava stone, but funny enough, she bumped into this piece on Crete. So I thought, I should go to Santorini to get cool stuff like this! Do you have any favorite places to buy jewelry?

Is May a Good Month for Santorini?

I’m considering a trip to Santorini and would love some firsthand insight on visiting in May.

I’m hoping for a balance between pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a more authentic feel of the island before peak summer tourism takes over. I’ve read that May can be warm but not too hot, with flowers still in bloom and restaurants starting to fully open for the season, but I’m curious how this plays out in reality. Does the island still feel calm, or is it already busy with cruise traffic? That's my main concern.
