My family made this for thanksgiving but I think it’s a really great dish to make for Christmas too! We slow roasted the beef with cumin, all spice, bay leaf, cinnamon, salt, pepper and tomato and then added prunes at the end. The meat was super tender and the prunes added such a nice sweet touch.
It is interesting to me that a lot of Greeks cook with cumin. I saw it mostly on the island of Crete. Is your family by any chance from Crete? In my family, we don't use cumin at all in our cooking. It looks delicious, though!
Greeks have been using herbs for medicinal purposes for generations, and these recipes and tips have been passed down from generation to generation. Greek spearmint or mint is one of the best ways to cure nausea and an upset stomach. Of course, if you have a serious medical illness you should seek the help of a doctor because mint is not a replacement for medical treatment. Next time you feel ill and nauseous, try adding mint to your herbal tea and see what happens!
This recipe is perfect for a big family with kids who are picky eaters! You can make this pasta in only 15 minutes, which is the best part! If im cooking it for adults, I always like to add a bit more vegetables since my kids don't really like veggies. This Greek Pasta is filled with equal parts al dente noodles and Mediterranean veggies - tossed in a creamy, light, feta and herb sauce. It takes just over 15 minutes from start to finish and is a hearty vegetarian dinner that is perfect for Meatless Monday or any family dinner!
Greek mastic ice cream is one of the best summer desserts. It has such a unique flavor, and is made from traditional Greek ingredients. Athens has some of the best street food in Greece! You can pretty much get great street food anywhere in Greece, but these are some of my best suggestions for the next time that you're in Athens. I recommend ordering a gyro pita with tzatziki, french fries, tomatoes, and onions! It's the classic gyro and you won't be disappointed.
- o Gyros Pou Gyrevis
- Tylixto Greek Wrap
- Just Pita
Making gyros can be pretty simple… but also pretty complicated. If you're in the mood for a challenge, I recommend that you check out this video and try making all of the different parts of a gyro from scratch. This is what I like to do if I have a little extra time on my hands, and want to impress my family lol. Of course, ordering takeout is always a great option, especially if you're supporting a local Greek business.
