One of my favorite things to do in Greece is visit wineries. This place looks outstanding. Kefalonia is such a gorgeous island with many opportunities like this.

Information Comparing Kefalonia vs. Other Ionian Islands

I’m planning a trip to Greece and currently weighing Kefalonia against some of the other Ionian Islands, and I’d love to hear from people who’ve visited more than one.

I’m trying to understand how Kefalonia compares in terms of overall feel, things like pace, scenery, beaches, towns, and how easy it is to get around. Is it quieter or more spread out than places like Corfu or Zakynthos? Does it feel more relaxed, or just less built up? I’m also curious about food, crowds, and whether Kefalonia feels better suited for exploring by car versus staying mostly in one area.

I’m not looking for a “best island” answer, just real comparisons from experience. What made you choose one Ionian island over another, and did it match what you were hoping for?

Driving Advice in Kefalonia?

I’m of Greek descent and visit Greece almost every year, so I’m no stranger to renting a car and getting around. but I’ve never driven in Kefalonia before. I’m thinking about making the trip next summer, though it’s not 100% decided yet, and I’m wondering what to expect.

I’ve heard that Kefalonia has some narrow, winding mountain roads, especially around Myrtos Beach and heading toward Assos. Is it really challenging to drive there, or is it manageable if you take it slow? How are the road conditions overall? Are there plenty of signs in English as well as Greek?

Also, what’s parking like in popular areas such as Fiskardo, Argostoli, and near the major beaches? I’m used to village driving on the mainland, but islands can be different.

5-Day Kefalonia Itinerary for First Time Visitors?

I’m planning my very first trip to Kefalonia and could really use some help building a 5-day itinerary. I’ll be visiting this summer and want to make the most of my time without feeling too rushed.

I’d love a mix of beautiful beaches, local villages, great food, and maybe one or two cultural or nature-based experiences like caves, wineries, or monasteries. I’ve heard great things about Myrtos Beach, Assos, and Melissani Cave, but I’m not sure how to organize the days or which area to stay in as a base.

Should I stay in one place the whole time or split my stay between two areas (like Argostoli and Fiskardo)? I’ll have a rental car, so I’m open to exploring.

If you’ve been to Kefalonia and have any tips, sample itineraries, or favorite spots, I’d be so grateful for your suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Traditional Dishes to Try in Kefalonia?

Hi everyone! I'm heading to Kefalonia soon and super excited to explore the island’s food scene. I’ve heard there are some amazing local dishes unique to Kefalonia, and I want to make sure I don’t miss out on the most traditional ones.

So far, I’ve seen people mention kreatopita (meat pie), and I’m curious about other authentic things to try — whether it’s main dishes, desserts, or street food. I love trying regional specialties when I travel and would rather eat what the locals eat than stick to touristy menus.

Are there any specific dishes that are only found on Kefalonia? Any tavernas or bakeries that serve amazing local food? I'd also love tips on what to pair with a glass of Robola wine!

Lixouri for a vacation apartment?

I’m planning a trip to Kefalonia next summer with a big group — family and close friends, around 8–10 people total — and we’re thinking of renting a large vacation apartment or villa. Lixouri keeps popping up as an option, but I don’t know much about it beyond being across the bay from Argostoli.

Is Lixouri a good base for a group stay? We’d love to be somewhere with an authentic Greek feel, good local tavernas, walkable areas, and easy access to beaches. We’ll have a few cars, so driving to other parts of the island isn’t a problem, but we don’t want to feel too isolated either.

For anyone who’s stayed there — what’s your impression of Lixouri? Peaceful and charming or a bit too quiet? Would you recommend it for a larger group vacation?
