These are the top beaches near Thessaloniki in my opinion!! Epanomi is my favorite beach, its super family friendly. Its an organized beach so you don't have to worry about bringing your own stuff. This is something that I struggle with because I don't usually rent a car when Im staying in Thessaloniki.

Thank you for sharing this list! How do you get around while in Thessaloniki? Taxi? It seems like a pretty accessible city, and that one wouldn't necessarily need to rent a car.

Favorite bakeries in Thessaloniki?

I may make it to Thessaloniki this year, and one thing I’m really looking forward to is the bakery culture there. Honestly, some of my favorite travel memories come from grabbing a quick snack or light meal from a bakery and just walking around the city.

I’d love recommendations for bakeries that locals genuinely like, especially places good for things like bougatsa, spanakopita, koulouri, tiropita, sandwiches, or simple sweets. I’m not necessarily looking for fancy pastry shops, more the kinds of bakeries people stop into regularly during the day.

Are there certain bakeries known for specific items? Also, are there areas of the city where the bakery scene is especially strong?

Part of what excites me about Thessaloniki is that everyone says the food culture there is incredible, and bakeries seem like a huge part of everyday life in the city.

How hot is Thessaloniki in summer?

Because of everyone's schedules this year, we're going to Greece in July instead of our usual late summer trip. We'll be spending most of our time in the Thessaloniki area, and I've actually never visited that part of Greece in July before.
Hhow hot does it usually get? I know Greece is warm in general during the summer, but is the heat in Thessaloniki manageable, especially if you're walking around the city? Does the humidity make it feel much hotter, or does the sea breeze help at all?

We're planning to do a mix of sightseeing, wandering around neighborhoods, and eating outdoors, so I'm wondering if there are certain times of day that are better for exploring.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's been there in July. Any advice or things you wish you'd known before going would be greatly appreciated!

I’m curious what that actually looks like there. Is it more about spending time in certain neighborhoods, sitting at cafés, or exploring markets? Are there specific areas where locals tend to go that visitors might overlook?

I’m also wondering if there are particular routines or small experiences, like a morning coffee spot or evening walk—that really capture the rhythm of the city.

For those who have been, what made Thessaloniki feel authentic to you? I’d love to go beyond the typical tourist experience and connect more with the everyday atmosphere.

Best Markets for Food Shopping in Thessaloniki?

One of my favorite things to do when visiting Greece is browse local food markets, and Thessaloniki seems like it would be especially fun for this. I’d love to hear which markets are best for finding fresh produce, olives, cheeses, spices, baked goods, and other Greek specialties.

Are there particular markets in Thessaloniki that you always recommend to visitors? I’m interested in both larger traditional markets and smaller neighborhood spots that locals actually use for everyday shopping.

I’d also love recommendations for specific stalls or shops within the markets, especially for things like feta, local cheeses, cured meats, herbs, honey, olive oil, or sweets that would make good gifts to bring home.

5 Days in Thessaloniki Enough or Too Much?

I’m starting to plan a possible trip to Greece with my family, and Thessaloniki is high on my list. I’ve always been interested in the history there — Byzantine sites, Roman ruins, Ottoman influences — plus the food scene seems incredible. It feels like a city with a lot of character compared to some more tourist-heavy destinations.

What I’m trying to figure out is timing. Would about five days in Thessaloniki be a good amount, or is that more than the city really needs? We tend to travel at a relaxed pace, not rushing from place to place, but I also don’t want to run out of things to do.

For those who’ve visited, how long did you stay? Did you wish you had more time, or less? Would you combine it with nearby day trips?
