Tips for driving in Crete?

I might be going to Crete in July, and I’m seriously thinking about renting a car because the island seems much bigger than I originally realized. Part of me loves the idea of being able to explore smaller villages, beaches, and mountain areas on my own schedule, but I’ve also heard mixed things about driving there.

For people who have done it, how difficult is driving in Crete really? I’ve heard the roads can get narrow and winding, especially in the mountains. Is parking difficult in places like Chania or Rethymno during the summer?

Also curious if renting a car ended up being worth it compared to relying on buses or tours. I don’t mind driving, but I also don’t want to spend the trip stressed out behind the wheel. Any advice, tips, or things you wish you knew beforehand would really help!

Rent a car!!!!! There is not much public transport once you are out of the main cities. Yes the mountain roads can be narrow and winding but nothing that I have not experienced in some parts of the USA. Parking in the small towns not a problem the cities can be a challenge but not unsurmountable. getting off the beaten track is just awesome so do yourself a favor and rent a car.

I rented a car in Crete and, for me, it was absolutely worth it. The island is much larger than many first-time visitors expect, and having a car made it possible to explore mountain villages, quieter beaches, and places that would have been difficult to reach by bus.

That said, some of the roads can be challenging. The main highways are generally straightforward, but once you head into the mountains, you'll encounter narrow roads, sharp turns, and occasional steep drop-offs. I found that taking my time and avoiding rushing made a big difference.

Parking was probably the most frustrating part, especially in Chania during peak summer season. I often parked a little outside the center and walked in rather than trying to find a spot near the harbor.

If you enjoy exploring independently, I think a car adds a lot to the experience. Some of my favorite memories came from simply pulling into a small village and stopping for lunch.
