Tips for Driving on Kefalonia?

I’ve been to Kefalonia several times and absolutely love the island, but oddly enough, I’ve never actually driven there myself. This summer I’m considering renting a car so I can explore a bit more freely, especially some of the smaller villages and the harder-to-reach beaches, but I keep hearing mixed things about the roads.

For those of you who’ve driven in Kefalonia, how challenging is it really? I know there are some steep mountain routes and narrow coastal roads, but are they manageable for someone who’s a decent driver but not used to tight switchbacks? Any tips for navigating the island safely, times of day to avoid, particular routes that are easier for beginners, parking advice, or things you wish you’d known beforehand?

I’d love to finally try driving there, but I want to make sure I’m prepared before booking the car.

Driving in Kefalonia is very doable, even if you’re not used to intense mountain roads—but it helps to know what to expect.

The main coastal roads and routes connecting Argostoli, Lassi, Sami, and Skala are generally well paved and straightforward. The challenge comes when you head inland or toward more remote beaches, where roads can be narrow, winding, and occasionally steep with sharp switchbacks. They’re manageable if you drive slowly and confidently, but this isn’t the place to rush.

A few tips: rent a smaller car, drive during daylight, and avoid peak midday traffic near popular beaches like Myrtos. Locals know the roads well and may drive faster—just pull over when safe and let them pass. Parking is usually informal but plentiful outside town centers.

If you take your time, driving actually unlocks the island’s best experiences.
