Tips for seeing the Parthenon (again)

I’m heading back to Athens soon, and it’s been years since I last visited the Parthenon—long before the Acropolis Museum was even built! This time, I’ll be traveling with someone who’s never been to Athens, and seeing the Parthenon is at the top of their list.

Since it’s been so long, I’d love your advice on making the most of the experience. Here are a few questions:
  1. Best time to visit: When is it least crowded, especially in summer?
  2. Acropolis Museum: How much time should we set aside, and are there must-see exhibits?
  3. Tickets: Are there combined tickets for the Parthenon and museum? Should we book in advance?
  4. Tips for photos: Any advice for great shots of the Parthenon and views of Athens?

Visiting the Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum is such a memorable experience! In summer, the best time to visit is either early morning when it opens or late in the afternoon to avoid both the crowds and the heat. The golden hour before sunset also offers stunning lighting for photos. For tickets, there’s a combined option that includes the Acropolis and other archaeological sites. Booking online in advance is highly recommended to skip long lines, especially during peak season.

At the Acropolis Museum, plan for at least 2–3 hours. The Parthenon Gallery is a must-see, showcasing the friezes in a beautifully reconstructed layout. The glass floor displaying ancient ruins is fascinating as well. For photos, head to Areopagus Hill or Philopappos Hill for breathtaking views of the Parthenon and Athens. Within the site, look for angles that capture both the details of the columns and the city skyline.

Best Places in Athens to Photograph Ancient Sites?

I’ve been to Athens a handful of times now, but oddly enough, I’ve never really brought a proper camera. Just the occasional phone snap. Next time, I want to change that — I’m going all in with my gear and planning my trip around photography, especially ancient sites.

Obviously, the Acropolis is top of the list, but I’m wondering: what are the best vantage points to capture it — especially for sunset or night shots?

Are there quieter ruins that offer amazing shots without the crowds? I’m also looking for angles that give context, like city + ruins together.

Proper Greek Coffee in Athens?

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve been to Athens, and I’m heading back soon. One thing I’m really looking forward to is sitting down for a proper Greek coffee—but I want the real deal, not some watered-down version in a touristy café.

Back when I visited years ago, I remember stumbling into a tiny place with older locals playing tavli, strong coffee being brewed in briki pots, and that unmistakable smell of roasted grounds—it was perfect. Of course, I didn’t write the name down, and who knows if it’s even still there.

Any recommendations for places like that? Somewhere that serves traditional Greek coffee, in an authentic, no-frills environment where you actually feel like you're in Greece, not just a photo-op café. I’d love to hear about your favorite spots, especially if they’re a bit off the beaten path.

Nighttime view of the Parthenon?

I’ll be in Athens soon and I’m especially excited to see the Parthenon lit up at night — I’ve heard it’s magical when it’s glowing above the city.

I’d love your tips on the best places to view it after dark. I’m open to rooftop bars, scenic streets, or quiet local spots where you can just sit and take it in. I’ve seen some photos from Lycabettus Hill and Filopappou, but I’m wondering what else people recommend — maybe somewhere less crowded?

Bonus if there’s a view with dinner or drinks involved, but I’m just as happy with a peaceful nighttime stroll and a clear view. I have been to Athens plenty of times - I just never really thought about where to go at night to have a great view.

First-time impressions of Athens

I’m in the early stages of planning an upcoming trip to Athens, and it made me realize something a little funny. It’s been a very long time since it was my first time there.

Every time I go now, I tend to fall into the same rhythm: familiar neighborhoods, favorite walks, the same cafés and viewpoints. I love Athens, but I’d really like to experience it again through fresh eyes instead of repeating my usual routine.

For those of you who remember your first visit, what were your initial impressions of Athens? What surprised you, in a good or bad way? Was it the energy, the mix of ancient and modern, the pace of daily life, or something completely unexpected?

And for anyone who’s helped a first-time visitor plan a trip, what parts of Athens seemed to leave the strongest impression on them?

Best Places for Sunset in Athens?

I realized recently that even though I visit Athens about once a year, I’ve never actually paid attention to the sunset there. I don’t have a trip planned at the moment, I’m just gathering ideas for the future, but now I’m curious about the best places in the city to watch the sun go down.

Are there classic spots locals love? I’ve heard of Lycabettus Hill and some rooftop bars, but I’m sure there are lesser-known viewpoints, coastal areas, or even neighborhood corners that offer beautiful light in the evening. I’d also love to know if certain places are better at different times of year or if the atmosphere changes depending on whether you’re in the center or closer to the Athens Riviera.

If you had to recommend your favorite places for a memorable sunset in Athens, where would you send someone who’s finally ready to pay attention?
