Unique Historical Sites of Kefalonia to Visit?

I’m starting to plan a trip to Kefalonia and would love some input, especially from a history perspective. I’ve been to Greece quite a few times and have visited a lot of the more well-known historical sites on other islands and the mainland, but somehow I’ve never made it to Kefalonia.

I know it’s not always talked about in the same way as places like Crete or Rhodes when it comes to history, but I’m assuming there are still some really interesting spots to explore. I’ve come across mentions of the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos and a few Venetian-era sites, but I’m sure there’s more I’m missing.

Are there any lesser-known ruins, monasteries, or historic villages that are especially worth seeing? I’m particularly interested in places that have a strong sense of story or local significance.

Kefalonia is a great choice, and you’re right, it’s quieter historically, but still full of depth if you look for it.

The Monastery of Saint Gerasimos is definitely worth visiting, especially because he’s such a central figure to the island’s identity. You can actually see his relics there, which adds to the experience.

For something with more atmosphere, I’d go to the Castle of Saint George. It was the old capital under Venetian rule, and walking through it gives you a real sense of how the island was structured politically.

You might also like Assos. It’s not “ruins” in the traditional sense, but the Venetian fortress above the village has incredible views and a strong historical feel. A lot of Kefalonia’s story is also in its villages, especially those rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake.
