We're planning a family trip to Athens this summer with our kids (teenagers) and would love some advice. We want to make the most of our visit and ensure there's something enjoyable for everyone.

Does anyone have recommendations for family-friendly activities or must-see attractions? We're particularly interested in historical sites, interactive museums, and any kid-friendly tours. Also, are there any parks or outdoor areas that would be great for picnics or leisurely strolls?

Additionally, tips on family-friendly restaurants or cafes would be greatly appreciated. We’re eager to experience local cuisine but want to make sure there are options suitable for our kids.

Kalispera from Athens!

You can find plenty of activities in Athens and the suburbs but it is better to plan as soon as possible since summer is very busy.
I hope the following will be useful:
Museums:
1) Acropolis: it is a must, but since last year, tickets are sold in slots to avoid overcrowding. For the Museum you can have a look here: https://etickets.theacropolismuseum.gr/?culture=en
2)https://kotsanas.com/en/home-en/ Please have a look at this museum. It is really unique and very interactive.
3)https://cultureisathens.gr/en/venue/mouseio-aggeliki-xatzimichali/ Τhis is an old family house , turn into a folk museum. It is free of charge and it is really worth visiting.

For picnics and more...

If you really want to have more ideas but friendly activities you can have a look here: https://www.kidslovegreece.com/greece-tours/?location_greece[0]=athens-with-kids

I hope you have the best of time!

Athens is a fantastic destination for families, offering a blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities. For historical sites, the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum are must-see attractions. The museum has interactive exhibits that are engaging for teenagers. The Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are also worth visiting.

For interactive museums, the Hellenic Children’s Museum and the Museum of Greek Children's Art offer fun, hands-on experiences. Consider taking a kid-friendly walking tour of Athens, which often includes mythology and storytelling to captivate younger audiences.

For outdoor areas, the National Garden is perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls, with plenty of shaded spots and a small zoo. Lycabettus Hill offers stunning views of the city and is great for a family hike.

When it comes to dining, try family-friendly restaurants like Tzitzikas kai Mermigas or Smile Cafe, which offer traditional Greek dishes with options suitable for kids. Enjoy your trip!

Any must-try dessert spots in Athens?

I might be heading to Athens this summer, and I’ve already started making a mental list of all the food I want to try—but I feel like desserts deserve their own plan.

I know about some of the classics like loukoumades and baklava, but I’d love to hear about specific spots that are really worth going out of the way for. Whether it’s a traditional pastry shop, a place known for one standout dessert, or even something more modern, I’m open to all of it.

Also curious if there are any places that are especially good in the summer, something refreshing, lighter, or just perfect after a long day walking around the city.
Would love any recommendations or favorites you’ve found!

First-time impressions of Athens

I’m in the early stages of planning an upcoming trip to Athens, and it made me realize something a little funny. It’s been a very long time since it was my first time there.

Every time I go now, I tend to fall into the same rhythm: familiar neighborhoods, favorite walks, the same cafés and viewpoints. I love Athens, but I’d really like to experience it again through fresh eyes instead of repeating my usual routine.

For those of you who remember your first visit, what were your initial impressions of Athens? What surprised you, in a good or bad way? Was it the energy, the mix of ancient and modern, the pace of daily life, or something completely unexpected?

And for anyone who’s helped a first-time visitor plan a trip, what parts of Athens seemed to leave the strongest impression on them?

Best Athens Restaurants with Acropolis Views?

I’ve been to Athens many times over the years, but one thing I never get tired of is a great meal paired with an Acropolis view. I’ve already been to a few of the classic spots, but for my next trip I’d love to branch out and try something new, maybe somewhere a little unexpected, or a place locals actually enjoy as much as visitors.

I’m open to anything: modern Greek, traditional tavernas, rooftop bars with small plates, or even hotels with great terraces that allow non-guests. What are your favorite restaurants in Athens with Acropolis views?

Which Temples Around Athens Are Worth Visiting Beyond the Parthenon?

I’ve been to the Parthenon before and absolutely loved it, but next time I’m in Athens, I’d like to go beyond the obvious. I know the city and surrounding region are full of ancient temples that don’t get as much attention, and I’d love to explore some of them.

Are there particular temples in or near Athens that stand out for their beauty, history, or atmosphere? I’ve heard the Temple of Hephaestus is remarkably well-preserved, but what about others—maybe a bit outside the city, like Sounion or Eleusis? Are any of them easy to reach by public transport or day trip?

I’m especially interested in sites that still feel powerful or peaceful to visit, without the huge crowds. Would love your recommendations for must-see temples, hidden gems, or personal favorites among Greece’s ancient sanctuaries.

How walkable is Athens?

I’m thinking about visiting Athens this year and trying to figure out how easy it is to get around on foot. I usually prefer walking when I travel, especially in cities where you can explore neighborhoods naturally without relying too much on transportation.

How walkable is Athens overall? Are the main areas like Plaka, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis close enough to each other to comfortably walk between them, or is it more spread out than it looks?

I’m also wondering where it makes the most sense to stay if I want to rely mostly on walking. Would it still be worth using the metro, or even renting a car, or is that unnecessary for a short trip?
