What to Do in Heraklion During a Cruise Stop

I’m looking for ideas on what to do in Heraklion during a cruise stop. I’ve already been once and did Knossos Palace, which was fascinating, but I don’t feel the need to repeat it.

This time, I’m hoping for something a bit more relaxed and experiential. I’m wondering if heading to a nearby beach makes sense time-wise on a cruise day, or if it’s better to stay closer to the city. I’ve also seen food tours mentioned, those really appeal to me, especially if they focus on local places rather than tourist traps.

For those who’ve done Heraklion without Knossos, what did you enjoy most? Beach clubs, wandering the old town, museums, markets, or food-focused activities? I’d love suggestions that feel unhurried but still doable within a cruise schedule.

If you’re skipping Knossos, Heraklion is actually a great place to slow down for a cruise day. I’d lean toward staying closer to the city rather than trying to squeeze in a beach farther out. The old town is very walkable and rewarding if you let yourself wander, Venetian walls, quiet side streets, small shops, and cafés where locals linger.

A food-focused experience is an excellent idea here. Several small-group food tours highlight bakeries, cheese shops, olive oil tastings, and casual meze spots that feel genuinely local rather than cruise-oriented. Even without a formal tour, visiting the central market area and grazing your way through bougatsa, koulouri, and coffee can feel wonderfully immersive.

If you want something cultural but unhurried, the Archaeological Museum is compact and fascinating, especially after having seen Knossos once already. It pairs nicely with a long lunch and people-watching before heading back to the ship.
