I have never been to Greece in winter and I was considering it. I found this video - it was very informative! Thought I'd share:

Athens in the winter can be pretty great! It's a lovely city year round, and I find the weather to be really pleasant. Here are some things we can do in the winter in Athens.

Explore the Acropolis and Ancient Agora

The Acropolis, a must-see when in Athens, is a great site to visit even during the winter months. It's pretty great in the winter! With fewer tourists, you can enjoy the stunning views of the city without the crowds and you can really get ore out of the experience.

The Ancient Agora is another historical area worth exploring, with its impressive ruins and ancient temples. Winter visitors will enjoy wandering around these ancient sites without the intense heat that often comes during the summer months.

Enjoy One of the Many Athenian Cafes

In Athens, especially during the winter months, you’ll find a plethora of cozy cafes serving warm drinks and Greek delicacies. Whether it's in a cafe in the bustling neighborhood of Psirri or a quaint spot tucked away in the depths of Plaka, visitors can warm up and relax with a cup of hot coffee and some delicious food The perfect way to recharge during your Athens adventure.

Visit the National Archaeological Museum

I love this museum so much! The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most prominent museums in Athens, and a top attraction to visit during the winter months. With an extensive collection of ancient Greek art and artefacts, the museum is a treasure trove of Greek history. Exploring the museum on colder days can be a delightful break from the chilly weather outside, with indoor heating making the visit more comfortable.

Take a Walk in the National Garden:

It's so pleasant to walk in Athens in the winter. The National Garden is a tranquil retreat in the heart of Athens city center, a perfect spot to connect with nature. Winter visitors can enjoy stunning views of the garden’s flora and fauna and stop for tea or coffee at the garden’s on-site cafe. It’s a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city streets and an opportunity to get some fresh air.

Explore the Various Neighborhoods

Winter is the perfect time to explore neighborhoods throughout the city, taking time to discover Athenian culture and its unique charm. The Plaka, Monastiraki, and Psirri neighborhoods offer a great combination of cafes, bars, and restaurants, with beautiful scenery and historic landmarks. Walking through the city's streets and exploring each neighborhood is an enjoyable way to get to know Athens, especially in the winter months.

This is all great advice! I absolutely adore walking through the neighborhoods and through the National Garden. And you're right, there's no reason why the restaurants and cafes would be closed!

It seems, too, that if I wanted to do something touristy, like go to the Parthenon, that it could be good to do it in the winter.

Tips for saving money in Athens?

I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.

Does anyone have tips or personal experiences to share on saving money while traveling in Athens?

Visiting Mount Lycabettus Question

I have never been to Mount Lycabettus, although I've been to Athens a handful of times - it just never came up to go here.

Here are some questions I have:

A few specific questions I have include:
  • What's the best time of day to visit Mount Lycabettus? Is it good at sunset?
  • Are there any hiking trails that you'd recommend?
  • How difficult is the trek up the hill? Is it suitable for beginners or those not used to hiking?
  • Is the funicular railway worth the ride, or is it better to walk?
  • Are there any facilities (like cafes or restrooms) available at the top or along the way?
  • Do you have any safety tips or things to watch out for?
Thanks in advance!

Greek Mythology Sites in Athens?

I am visiting Athens and want a feel for where to go that pertains to Greek mythology.Of course, the Acropolis is on my list, but I wish to explore other places related to gods, goddesses, heroes, and their legendary tales as well.

For those of you who have ventured on similar quests or possess knowledge about Greek mythology's physical footprints in Athens, could you recommend:
  1. Must-visit sites that are deeply connected to Greek mythology.
  2. Any lesser-known locations that offer a unique insight into the myths.
  3. Tips for making the most out of these visits (best time to go, how to avoid crowds, etc.).
  4. Any resources (books, guides, websites) that could help deepen my understanding of the myths associated with these sites.
I’m extremely excited about this trip and looking forward to your recommendations and insights! Thanks!

Unique Photo Spots in Athens?

I will be traveling to Athens this year in the spring. What are some great photo spots throughout the city? Aside from what inspires me?

I have a bad habit of forgetting to take pics while away and I come back from the vacation with a random collection. This time, I want to do some advanced planning. Some of my ideas:

- Parthenon/ Acropolis - A shot with people and the Parthenon in the background
- Food photos - plenty of shots with people - and table shots - and of myself - eating the delicious food
- Monastiraki - This place is full of life - there could be some great candid shots

Do you guys have any ideas?
