I'm planning a trip to Athens and though I'm excited, I'm also trying to be mindful of my budget. The charm of historical sites like the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and experiencing the vibrant Greek culture is something I cannot put a price tag on. However, I am looking for ways to stretch my euros further while enjoying what Athens has to offer.

Does anyone have tips or personal experiences to share on saving money while traveling in Athens?

I have some insider tips about Athens. These are things that I recommend:
  1. Discover Hidden Anafiotika: Tucked away under the Acropolis, the Anafiotika neighborhood offers an island-like charm right in the heart of Athens. Stroll through its narrow streets adorned with white-washed houses and blooming bougainvillea for a quick escape to the Greek islands. I've poked around here, it's charming.
  2. Explore Local Markets: For an authentic taste of Greek life, visit the bustling markets of Athens. The Varvakeios Market on Athinas Street is a feast for the senses, offering everything from fresh produce to traditional Greek spices and cheeses. Don’t miss out on the nearby specialty shops known for their olives, nuts, and dried fruits. The neighborhood markets are definitely a delight. They have everything!
  3. Enjoy Sunset at Mount Lycabettus: While the Acropolis gets most of the attention, Mount Lycabettus offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, especially at sunset. The summit can be reached by a funicular, but a hike up the hill promises a rewarding experience. SO beautiful!

While "get rich quick" schemes online are usually a recipe for disappointment (looking at you, apps that pay real money instantly!), exploring free activities in Athens is a surefire way to stretch your travel budget.

Forget expensive tours – get lost in the charming Plaka neighborhood, people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere. Pack a picnic lunch and head to the National Garden for a dose of nature and ancient ruins (free admission!). Athens is an open-air museum waiting to be explored!

When I visited, I fell in love with the rich history and vibrant culture too. Stretching euros in Athens can be a breeze with a few tricks.
Speaking of saving, I remember a time when I was wondering how to make money fast for a trip. I turned to coupon apps for my everyday purchases, which helped me stash away some extra cash. As for Athens, consider exploring local markets for budget-friendly eats and opting for walking tours instead of pricey guided ones. Also, many attractions offer discounted tickets on certain days or times.

Greek Mythology Sites in Athens?

I am visiting Athens and want a feel for where to go that pertains to Greek mythology.Of course, the Acropolis is on my list, but I wish to explore other places related to gods, goddesses, heroes, and their legendary tales as well.

For those of you who have ventured on similar quests or possess knowledge about Greek mythology's physical footprints in Athens, could you recommend:
  1. Must-visit sites that are deeply connected to Greek mythology.
  2. Any lesser-known locations that offer a unique insight into the myths.
  3. Tips for making the most out of these visits (best time to go, how to avoid crowds, etc.).
  4. Any resources (books, guides, websites) that could help deepen my understanding of the myths associated with these sites.
I’m extremely excited about this trip and looking forward to your recommendations and insights! Thanks!

I'll be in Athens soon, and I would like to go to church! I am trying to find a church that has liturgy that is preferably by my hotel. I am staying in the Plaka.

The Church of the Holy Apostles – This Byzantine church dates back to the 10th century and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine architecture in Greece.

St. Irene’s Church – St. Irene’s Church is located in the heart of Athens and is considered one of the oldest Byzantine churches in the city.

Should you come to Athens in the winter?

I have never been to Greece in winter and I was considering it. I found this video - it was very informative! Thought I'd share:

Most touristy areas in Athens?

I’m planning a trip to Athens and I want to make sure I get to experience the most iconic and touristy areas the city has to offer. While I’m all for off-the-beaten-path adventures, I also believe that some places are popular for good reasons, and I’d hate to miss out on those.

Could anyone share their recommendations for must-visit tourist spots in Athens? I’ve heard the Acropolis is a no-brainer, but I’m curious about other places as well. Also, if there are any tips for navigating these areas (best times to visit, ticket hacks, etc.), I’d greatly appreciate it!
